Subject: LP Tank Plate

Winsted MN Central MN
I am looking at a LP tank 30,000 GL The price is right and it will be delivered to my place. There is a problem with the tank, there is no tank plate (face plate) on this tank. What I was wondering, is there a way to get a new face plate put on this tank. What would I have to do. This tank was sand blasted and painted white. Any help on this matter would be great or a phone # would be helpful. Has anyone tried this. Thanks toot

NW Pa.
No face plate could be a problem. If there's no documentation on the serial number ( NB number). I would be Leary.

Chebanse, IL.....

I agree w/8130JD. All LP dealers that I know of won't fill any size tank without a data plate in place. I've been told that it's almost impossible to obtain one if it's missing. This includes NH3 tanks, which are thicker than LP tanks.

If it were me I'd continue the search. I think most sellers know they are "SOL" selling without plate & probably price the tank low to try & move it.

"here" I believe you can get them pressure tested and xrayed

It is like the same price as a new tank so a old tank without a tag is scrap price

Price is right because it is only good for a water tank now...…. I tried this a couple times. One time I gave up and sold the tank to a dealer, the second time I found the tag laying right below the tank in the dirt. Got lucky

Only hope is to find some stampings on the tank itself that will prove what the tank actually is and who built it. From that point you can contact National Boilers and get a new tag made. Probably will have to pay someone to inspect and install new plate.

More than likely the reason it is sandblasted and painted is because someone was already looking for the stampings...…. and some tanks with a tag are still not good enough without a national board number.

I don't know all state laws, and it does vary state by state. Tanks without plates are usually 'refurbished' and shipped out of the country where the laws aren't so particular...…….

The laws aren't so silly, not all tanks are created equal, and who wants to be anywhere near a 30,000 gallon tank and find out it wasn't made strong enough. It might look like a propane tank, but it really isn't without the data plate.

Last I knew a 30K gallon tank without a plate was worth about 0.50 a gallon on a good day. One with a plate, national board number and good specs were worth 1.50 a gallon. Makes that plate and number worth about 30K...……. I think the tank market has gotten softer the last couple years, so that might be too high.

All depends on the LP Tanker driver, some couldn't give a darn as long as it has the right hook-ups and the next will be an A$$ about it.

Last I knew in Iowa as long as the tank has been in active use it is still 'grandfathered' in and can still be used. Once you move that tank, even across the yard, it has to be up to current specs which would include the data plate and board number.

Some older tanks were 200psi tanks or even a little under where newer tanks are typically 250psi. Then you get into if it has stress relieved heads or not, ect. All that is on file with the national board, hence the need for the tag and board number.
