As a guy who used to work for cat on those engines, I will say they are NOT a good engine. Not that it will blow on you, but you can have injector issues from time to time, rack will need run about every 100K, The injector cup coppers in the head can go bad on occasion and the engine itself is a 300K engine at best.

If it was me I'd try and find one with a DT 466/DT 530 or 3126 CAT

The 3126 really isn't much better, the later ones had a somewhat better injector setup but still nowhere near the engine a DT-466 or 8.3 Cummins is.

We had a 953 Cat loader with a 3116 in it and it was fine for that application. The trucks we had with a 3116 weren't so great. They were not a long life engine over the road.

I had a FL70 Freightliner with a 3126 and 9 speed. No power was the big issue. Dropped
a valve and ruined the non sleeve block. I lost big time on repairs and was never so glad
to see it gone.

I have a 1990 GMC tandem with a 3116, auto trans and 20’ box. We probably put less than 3000 miles a year on it. Loaded you will never worry about getting a speeding ticket. I have had the truck for over 15 years and never touched the motor so for me it has been a good truck in that respect. I will say again though that it is gutless but for our short hauls we get along with it. The auto trans is nice because almost anyone can drive it.

I'm not impressed with the one in our '94 Kodiak/18' box. It's better now that all we use it for is short hauls, field to farm and field to coop. Have since bought semi for storage to river/ethanol plant. The Allison makes our setup tolerable. Personally, I'd look for DT 466 but if used for short hauls and priced right I wouldn't pass on it.

I have a ‘95 topkick with a 3116 and Allison auto. It is no powerhouse but it gets along fine. I did have to do the injector cups about a year ago. It is not a really great cold starting engine but it has always started. If it is much below freezing I plug it in anyways. I think a lot of the complaints about a lack of power is because people expect it to pull like a much bigger engine than what it is.
