Faunsdale, AL | The original D333 was probably not one of CAT's best efforts but an adequate engine if its not punched too much. On the low end in a D6B it was naturally aspirated and rated around 100 Hp and I have a military surplus turbocharged power unit rated 200 but I expect there were marine versions higher than that.
It was a 4.5" bore x 5.5" stroke 6 cylinder precombustion chamber design engine that replaced the venerable D318 around 1959-1960. There were several small upgrades through the mid 60's until about 68 or 69 the engine was redesigned and the bore increased to 4.75" and redesignated the D333C. This was changed slightly through the early 70's and then became the 3306 around 1972-1973. The 3306 will have an engine serial number separate from the Caterpillar machine serial number. All earlier models had a serial number tag matching the machine it was (originally) installed in.
I don't know if it is any kind of recommendation but we ran a D330 (4 cylinder version) backwards for several minutes one day without any apparent ill effects!
