Subject: Welding on a hydraulic cylinder ?s

west central Iowa
I found some hydraulic cylinders I thought would work for bucket cylinders on a westendorf loader, they are odd stroke and high priced from westendorf. I got them mounted on the loader, but the plumbing hits on the quicktach bucket brackets. I have the square fittings cut off from a pair of junk westendorf cylinders. How hard will it be to cut off the fittings from the new cylinders and weld on the ones from the old westendorf cylinders. I can take the cylinder apart, my main concern is getting the cylinder too hot and warping something.

don't get carried away with the welding time

you are going to put them the same height on the tube?

Well, I have no experience in doing this, but someone welded the original ones on......

How far back are you moving the fitting it looks too far in the pic youll get on the wrong side of the piston. A good hydrauc shop could fix your old ones for about 300 each including making new rods if your old tubes are good.

I'm not moving the fitting back at all, I just set it on there to show the difference in height, I'll put it where the original port was. I don't have any original cylinders, these I have only cost about $80 a piece so I'm hoping to make them work.

Could they mount the other way? With the rod on top instead of the bottom? I suppose the upper hose may still hit.

Welding on then shouldn't be a problem as long as you can get the area clean. I try to heat some with a torch to burn the oil off to weld it.

Hard to tell from your pix, but even with the new piece welded on the cylinder, how much is it really going to allow you to roll the bucket back. If it isn't very much what about a slim cylinder stop that would allow it to just miss the fitting??? Or maybe someone makes a shorter fitting that could get you out of the way better. If you take the cylinder apart i cannot dream of anything being wrong with welding, but if it was me i would search for a alternative fitting first., Or have something made, doesn't look too special.

It doesn't look like it in the pic, but there will be over an inch difference between the way it is and how it will be with the fitting from the old junk cylinders. It will make it like the original cylinders that let it roll all the way back.

Do your new cylinders have a longer stroke? If so you can add a rod stop in between the piston and head to make them the same as the originals.

You can cut the old port and weld the new one on, but it will probably distort or egg shape the tube. If you have access to a set of stone hones you can possibly hone it back round and be alright.

That's what I'm worried about is distortion, I was just wondering how they weld them in at factory without distorting it.

We weld them on and then hone them to the final bore.

That should work if picked apart. Do one of the four sides and let it cool. Repeat 3 more times. If you want to take all the sealing parts out of end cap, coat threads with nickle anti seize, screw back on during welding, that may help.

As good as those loaders are, the cylinders really stink

I had something similar but what I did was cut the top mount off of the cylinder, it was basically a pipe welded to the top of the barrel, rotated the cylinder 1/4 turn a rewelded the pipe back on. It worked for what I wanted a looks like it may work for you depending on what the top of the cylinder looks like

I thought about that but the fitting would hit on the side of the quick tach then. I just checked with a guy that's a pretty good welder and has done it before and he's gonna Tig weld the fittings for me thanks for everybody's suggestions.

I've done something similar on a similar cylinder. Old cylinder damaged beyond any salvageable parts, new one came in, installed and couldn't thread the fitting into one of the blocks. Pulled cylinder off and found someone had dropped it on one of the blocks egging the hole. I disassembled the new cylinder to keep metal out of the new packing and cut the bad block off. Cut the good one off the old cylinder and used a long shank 3/8 bolt with the head cut off because it fit snug in the cylinder hole and the hole in the block to line it up to weld. Tacked it, removed bolt, and burned it in. Didn't worry about distortion since the barrel was plenty thick. Let it cool naturally, cleaned and assembled. I did put a pipe plug in the threads to keep them from getting any boogers in them. A little paint and no one is the wiser.
