Is a 1987 white 2-155 a 1,2, or 3 series? Also, when does it call for rebuilding the Hercules 478 engine. It uses 1-1.5 quarts of oil after 12-14 hours of field work. Thanks

I could be wrong, but I thought by 1987 the tractors were past the Series III. The Hercules engines around here have all needed rebuilding in a range of 3200-10000 hours. Not much help. Does the tractor still have good power? If so, I would probably keep putting oil in it until convenient to rebuild.

87 wouldve been the very last of the 155s, IIRC 88-90 was the 100 series. If it needs an overhaul, call Maibach tractor and have Brad send you a kit, they are top notch guys and it will have the military sleeves and pistons, they are much better materials and raise the compression by a point. Last I checked he has some 22-1 pistons left if you wanna get real crazy.

If youve got good oil pressure and dont need a clutch, you can get by with just an inframe, the bottom end of these motors are built extremely stout, and usually dont have many issues. You cannot change the main bearings inframe, but Id pull one just to be sure of the condition. You will need a special wrench to get to some of the head bolts. If the tractor is nice, and you like it, have Maibach send you the bigger turbo too, it makes a big difference. We did the exact same recipe to a 155 and without putting it on a dyno, which Id like to do, seat of the pants tells me its all of 180 pto hp, probably more, I know it has alot more pep than our 160 White does.

There are a few differences in the LDT465, especially the multi fuel, the injection system is different for one, and some other things, but Im not real sure. I would check over on Yesterdays Tractor or Brad might know. Dont think about being able to use the multifuel option though, it was for fit hits the shan times only.

Fawazhay did a 135 and I think hes pretty happy with it.

BTW did you end up getting that 8710 Brandon?

Use one of these and be money ahead on a rebuild of the 478. This is basically the same motor Hercules 478 (Tractor civilian) LDT465 1D latest (Military). use parts off 478 to adapt the LDT465.

Thanks Rich, Does the LDT465-1D bolt right up? Would the PTO shaft fit up? Thanks

Same Block – Similar head needs holes drilled and tapped for water pump.
465 better balanced, stronger crank
LDT-465 Compression 22.5 to 1 vs 17 to 1 on Herc 478

From 478 you need Injection pump, turbo, intake and exhaust manifolds, Oil pan and pickup, air compressor block off plate and fuel filters

From 465 remove air compressor, change the fuel filters to spin on, replace pan and pick up,
Change injection pump and front plate

Engine uses same flywheel - PTO hub

I'm not familiar with multifuel engines. What different fuels are used? What is different on the engine from a regular diesel?

Sombody else will know better than me, but the whole injection system is different.

I did not end up with the 8710 at auction. I think it brought upper $20k, which for the condition was more than I was going to spend and quite a bit more than I thought a higher hour White in CA would be worth.

On the other note, I am happy with the rebuild we did on our 2-135.

Mustve been pretty rough, I got the one we were looking at, paid $50K for it, got a Trimble FMX, and its set up with hydraulic steering, plus a whole bunch of planter parts for it in the deal as well.

Sounds like you are happy. The White tractors out here don't typically bring much. I actually was surprised the one I was looking at brought over $17,500. Here, the Genesis tractors are really strong, but in other areas you don't see blue.
