Subject: John Deere 9030 vs 9000R

Hey NAT

We r looking to upgrade our jd 9300, been an excellent and almost trouble free Machine. Looking to stay the same size but want a pto and want to stay around 2-3k hours. While shopping on the net I’m seeing that the 30s seem to be going for the same amount if not higher than the 9000r’s. Just wondering if it’s because the market seems to be flooded with them or if they’re troublesome. We usually get married to our tractors so they easily stick around until that 8-10k hour mark. So my question is What will stand the test of time better?

9020 would be my first look, no emissions and no stupid fan drive. Know they will go 10k. New ones seem to be cheaper built- meaning see the shop more and you can’t do a lot to them. Have a 9430 and haven’t been impressed with it. 9400 makes it look like a pile. 30 is nice with powershift but a fuel hog.

Neighbor had a 9520 and bought a 9530r and the 9520 would walk all over it.
The 9530r found a new home.

My 9420 had electrical issues so I traded it for a 9510R. R series have their issues with more emissions and such and now I read where they have head gasket failures on some models. I had a 9630 for a while and wish I would have kept the fuel hog if I had it to do over again.

Starting with a 8960 we've had a every JD series of 4 wheel drive tractors up to the current Rs except the for 70 series.  The only tractor that gave us problems was a 9630.  Kept throwing fuel codes and never ran right.  Since then we've had two 9560Rs and our current 9570R and 9520Rs and they have worked great for us.

There is no such thing as a 9530r? 9530 or 9510r or 9520r

We upgraded our 9300 to a 9460r two years ago. 9460 is a really nice tractor but I would not want to go any smaller to get similar horsepower to your 9300. The 9460 is a little bigger but not much. A lot of people said the 9410r had less power than a 9300. We were originally looking for a 9410r but ended up with a 9460. Ours only has 750 hours but no problems so far.

HaHa, that's funny. Looking back I wish I had all the money I spent updating tractors and just kept my 8960.

We are 99% green.  The reason I use "Steiger" for a handle is because we have a Steiger CA 280 to go along with our 3 JD 4 wheel drive tractors.  Also, I am a fan of the old lime green Steigers preferable the Cat powered ones.  Any Steiger built after CIH got a hold of them is where I loose interest in them.

We also are 99% Green now, but I grew up with IH tractors, disks & plows until IH closed their doors then gradually made the switch to Green everything. Still like my 1206.

There was a time on our farm when we were mostly IH too.  The high point was during the 50s when we farmed with W-9, WD-9, TD 14A crawler, Farmall M, later on a 240U was added, some IH drills, IH disks, IH chisel plow, and couple of IH pickups too.  And we still have all of that stuff with the exception of the W9 tractors.

Have had all series of Deere 4we except 70 series and R series. Our 9x20 series and 9x30 series were both excellent. Would guess you will have a harder time finding a sub 3000 hour 9x20. Newer 4wd tractors are soft right now. I like my 9430 a lot, and would guess you could get a pretty good deal right now.

Do the 9030s have injector/cup problems like the 9000 & 9020s had? And also is there a differenc between early and late 9030s.
