Subject: CAT D7E dozer blade, repair or replace?

Mid-Missouri
Have a 48a serial number D7E that is need of a new front skin, or replace the entire blade with a better one.

It sounds like it could take 2 or 3 grand to remove/clean up the partly rusted out and peeled up front skin, and then attach a new skin to the front. The pins and bushings, along with the tilt cylinder are in above average condition. I suppose the cutting edge is good enough as well.

Option B would be to find a different blade in better condition that would fit. It would be nice to have a blade slightly taller, for tree work. It would also be nice for it to have a bit more curve to roll the soil, as well as a more pronounced "semi-u" shape on the wings to carry more soil. I don't think I have ever seen a D7E blade that appears as suggested though, so maybe none were made like that to fit this machine? Newer model blade fit this older machine?

I skinned the blade on my D6R series 2,,. I went to a welding shop that had some AR steel that they also have a roller, so I had a template made with cardboard that matched the curve of the blade, they rolled it to almost the curvature,

I then cleaned the front of the blade up, welded a couple tabs along the bottom to align where I wanted the plates to sit, I then wrapped a 1/2" chain around the blade vertically, I took my porta power with the v attachment on one end of the cylinder( chain side) and the flat plate on the other end, put it under the chain and pressed the final curve out of the skin and welded the plate into place,, I installed the plate in 2 pieces( left half, right half), that way you can weld the middle also and wasn't so hard to press into place and fit closer,, it took the better part of a day once I had the steel in hand,,,.

The steel cost was around $ 700 if I remember correctly along with the cost of them rolling and shearing it to size,,

The D7E are a few of the all time best tractors made. Do you have the low hp or high? If your pins &corner blocks are ok probably better off rebuilding the face. The 7E will out push a 7F & equal a 7G. Helps if they have a ripper or winch on rear They are slower geared, the dirt rolls easier

Reason i know this is from running them, think about it, you missed a whole series or about ten years.

NC Kansas

Cat 7F had Two finals drives, first was same as E's with with ratio change mid series. Later drives were "geared down" as 6 cly. engine reved higher than 4 cly. and helped with torque and transmision heat. These finals were on "G"  also.  R

I had a d7e ex military that had the push plate welded in the center, it never scoured like it should have. I'd probably look for a used semi u blade that you could bolt in place probably cheaper then welding a new face on. I've got a d7r now that's been refaced, they did a good job but I don't think it scours as well as one that hasn't been done. It's just like a plow, a scoured one pulls easier then one that isn't. I wish I had a better pic of the blade. The welds are where the dirt sticks first, and it falls off when you're trying to finish something off and plop it falls off in big slabs.

I went to puritan steel in omaha, presented them with a curve template of the blade with all dimensions, and ordered a slab of 1/8" ar200 steel for them to roll out. cost about 400 bucks to cover whole blade, and it fit against the curve of the old one absolutely perfectly. I simply pushed against it with my forkilft and a big block in between and welded it in.

old blade had a rather large hole punched in lower corner of face, with a really ugly piece of steel glued over it. now it will peel dirt like a plow again. here it is after I finally got all the black coating off and got it to polish.

Eddie - take it down to Ammon Zimmerman east of Versailles. They will remodel that blade back to like new. I just took a 953C loader down there last week to have the bucket rebuilt. They do EXCELLENT work, and are reasonable.
