I'm thinking about buying a planter this winter. I currently have a neighbor do it with a Kinze 3660 12 row. It's 100% no-till into some big covers. I was looking at Kinze 6/11s but stumbled onto the Black Machine/Whites. It seems like everyone is a big fan of the White meters. What about the row units? How does a 6342 White Unit compare to a 3000 Kinze unit when it comes to some very challenging no-till conditions. What about an 8342? How will an mx135 mfwd handle the White folded up? Will the negative tongue weight be too much for it? Can you put the wing wheels down when they're folded back to get rid of the negative tongue weight? I work full time and will be using the same tractor to plant, spray and bale in the spring so being able to plant 12 rows of corn would be nice.

Are you planning on using a planter such as this to plant your corn in 30" rows and your soybeans in 15" rows? You say your neighbor has been planting yours with a Kinze 3660 12-row - is that a straight 12-row or a 12/23 planter? I have no experience with White planters of the configuration you are looking at so someone else will have to address that.

If you are planting everything in 30" rows, there are many other models of White planters that would not have the issue of negative tongue weight. As far as the White planter itself, very simple metering system, low power requirements for the air system, very easy to switch seed disks. The 6000 series will probably work fine in no-till, although I'm not real sure how it would do in tall covers as you describe. It's just like any other planter brand - the later models have heavier row units, which are even better for no-till. 8000 Series is heavier than the 6000 series, 9000 Series is heavier than the 8000 Series.

If you like the job that your neighbor's 3660 Kinze does, you will probably not be happy with the 6342 White, simply because the 3660 is a current model (heavier built) and the White 6342 is 18-20 years old. In order to have something more similar, you would want to be looking at the White 8000 Series for sure. The planting conditions you describe are challenging to say the least. You only get 1 chance a year to get planting right so you want to make sure your planter is up to the task!

His is a 12/23 row. I'd be using it to plant 15" beans. The quicker canopy has me sold on narrow rows. Even the 15s take a little longer to canopy than I'd like, but I think I can cut back my bean population a bit more with a planter than a drill. I dropped my population to 140,000 this year and had my highest yield ever with my lowest seed cost ever. Weather may have had something to do with that though.

was going to buy green when I ran across the white. 9000 series are a huge step up from the older units.

will never be back to a green planter again. can't touch the price, quality is no better and no Deere dealer can touch the service of Ziegler.

I've used the 6000 series row units since 1991. Check the heavy duty down pressure springs for broken hooks (replaced them all once in that time), keep the double disk openers in good shape, change the squeeze pump hoses before they wear out, check for broken springs on the closing wheel (broke 2 in all that time), check for slop in the parallel arms, and make sure you closing wheel run true of the slot (had an adjuster go bad once). Biggest issue I've had with the White 6100 planter is mice building nests in the air system. Just plan on taking it loose and blowing it out every year. Take the seed plates off and they leave the meter brushes a lone.

I run a 8831. 16/31 since 2013. Best planter ever. Simple easy to use. Takes a bit to switch from 30" to 15" but with two guys it goes quick.

I am not an expert but have used a White 6100 for 2 years now. I like the meter, seems simple and works well. I used the small corn plate and the bean plate with small holes in it(I do have medium corn plate as well, but was told use small unless corn seed does not fit). I No-tilled beans into standing cover and No-tilled corn in bare ground(except for NH3 bar marks). I think the actual difference from the 6000 to 8000 unit is more ergonomics than mechanical. I've had some people claim the White(not 9000) is a little light for no-till, I have had no problems getting depth.

I have heard the term newer 6000 series, I believe it the dual closing wheel instead of the single. You WANT the dual closing wheels if you go with the 6000, almost all 8000's have them. I did put the RK products roller bearing in my closing wheel arms. I also run furrow cruisers now(1 year). Mine came with Dawn screw adjust row cleaners, seem good. I do not run a coulter, but my openers are near new. If your tractor has closed center hydraulics you will not need a PTO pump, I run a PTO pump but hydraulic requirements are very minimal for the fan.

The White seems very reasonably priced, especially the 6000. I can't help on the 63xx or 83xx(the black machine design), I run 30" rows only, I do believe I should have gone with an 8(spray with a 60' sprayer) or 12(combine with 6 row) row, but like planter. I will post some picks later in day. I would try and get the SM3000(over the SM1000) monitor if you get the 6000. The early 8000 should have the SM3000 unless it is something newer.

pics: Overall pic, RK products, after install of Furrow cruisers and my shop, worn out factory closing arm bushings, planting beans in cover(2016), SM3000 monitor(notice how it counted every bean, good for a '94 planter) , bean plate. I loaded in reverse, but you get the idea.

We run a 6342 for 6 years now, once we got the hang of it its very simple planter to work on and operate. When we bought it, we basically rebuilt it, most of the hoses we cracked up so we replaced them all.
Changed opening disks and all new bearings/ bushings.
Last year installed Yetter trash whips. It is a pain to switch from 30" to 15" but with couple people its ok, only because of moving the marker arms, if you run GPS you may not need to change.
We pull ours with a 8010 Allis front wheel assist. it pulls it good for us, even with the hills we have and heavy soil. Ours does not have hyd wheel lifts on the wings, they are just a guide wheel more less, there is or was a kit to make them hyd.

I love my 6000 white. I've been over 1000 acres per year for 5 years. 8r30 with a 9 row splitter behind it. Mostly notill so I put on the heavy duty springs, 4 per row. Also put on RK products gauge wheels pivots, and their ball bearing closing wheel pivots.
What I like about mine is the ability to unhook the splitter to plant corn and not drag around extra weight. But I also harvest with an 8 row head so it works out. The 6342 you speak of looks like a heavy complicated bar, but might be nice for 12 row corn.
I've been looking at kinze pivot folds with interplants but I feel I'd be going backwards with a finger pickup unit. The white meter is so simple and accurate, just try to get medium round seed.

I had a 6242. Still use white planters. Imo, the wheel bearings are the biggest weakness of a black machine fold white. Whites are wonderful planters. Getting the 6242 to no till well was never a problem. It is over 16 feet wide going down the road. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend a white planter.

I had a 6100 8 row for years, planted though anything. Skyfish pretty much nailed everything. Have a friend that has a Black Machine that has 7000 units on it. It is heavy. He pulls it with a 4440, no issues at all. Great for 12 rows of corn, same with 15" beans. Not as fun to fill seed boxes in 15" row, but very doable. White is very simple to use and does a outstanding job.

We had a 17 row Black Machine with 2000 series Kinze units. Pulled it with a 100 Hp 2wd in mostly flat ground. No issues ever on handling. Ran 7+ mph planting beans. Your MX will be just fine on a 13 row.
I do not remember ours having any negative tongue weight at all. Wing wheels wouldn't touch the ground if you did have them valved open.
We did modify the drives because from the factory they had 4 rows running off 1 transmission and 13 running off the other when folded back.
Traded off BM for an 8531 White. Gauge wheel shafts, bushings, & seals do wear out sooner than you may think on White units.
I always thought what you are looking at may be the perfect combo. Corn planting spacing & singulation is a challenge to achieve if you want to see numbers above 99% all the time.

Loved them for beans, absolutely hated them with corn. Super finicky on seed size. Certain seed will not plant accurately no matter what you try. Run a kinze finger planter now and never going to a White again.

Been running a 8816 since 2014. Has air bags and tru-count shutoffs controlled with a trimble fmx. That being said I would like a 9816... The depth control is nicer.

I have a 12 row front fold 6000 series. Easy planter to set. I notilling into corn stalks with a wavy coulter and furrow closing wheels. Biggest thing is get med rounds for corn seed, keep all drive chains and idlers in tip top shape. Vibration in the drive system can knock seed of the seed disk as a White uses very little positive air pressure. the 8000 series uses cogged idlers on the unit drives, these work great on a 6000 also. In tall cornstalks, a stalk can tend to get in the chain, knocking it off the idlers resulting in a low population. Good luck!
