We don't mind our 490, but there's a sweet spot speed wise, they can be pulled too fast and will start making waves.

Might be the best finishing disc. Weak spots are the wheel bearings and 1 1/8 inch arbor bolts on the larger wings.

Have a 496 I really like, not sure how different they are. As mentioned above there’s a sweet spot with the speed. Mine is 26ft I can I go about 7mph tops before it starts having issues but it seems to vary

All the above is true. We pull ours infront of a corregated roller after chisel plowing and that is what we finish with.

Use to have a 21'490 years ago, 7 1/2" spacing. Good finishing disc but was a little light when it come to working corn stalks in the fall. Besure to check the linkage that contols the wing wheels as they & the pins can wear making it hard to level. Traded it for a 24' 496. 496 cut stalks better but didn't do as good of job of finishing as the 490. 496 was also garder to get leveled. Try to find one that has tandem wheels on the wings, will have less problems góuging.

The 496 was the next model, lighter, less ridged frame. By going to rams on the wings, they got rid of the wing rockshafts and the POS adjusting screws at the fold. Also reduced the load on the center rockshaft and the wear/load on the center ram. Too many wear points without grease points. The hitch pivots tended to wear. Many of the shortcomings can be fixed or modified. Usage would be measured in tens of thousands of acres covered. Not unusual to wear out several sets of blades, tires, and bearings. If I were looking for a disc, it would be a 490.

This is my experience. Also to add a 490 is better working shallow. The back gangs on the 496 want to quit turning if I try to go too shallow.

Have a 490 32ft. Good disk in the spring not for the fall. Does do good for finishing as others have said. Mechanical lift definitely has it's wear spots. I also have a 820 MF 21ft. I don't notice any difference in the job either one does. The cast standards are weak spot on MF but I have plenty of spares.

Have a 490 25' fall or 9" spaced disk. Does a great job on corn stalks and just about everything else. Wish mine had a leveler on the back, leaves a furrow on each end, but that can be easily fixed with a small blade added to the back (extension). Great disk, would highly recommend

SC Iowa
Go with the 25', the wings are too narrow on the 20' and ride out of the ground.

We have a 20' 490. it's been here longer than I. Don't use it much anymore, but i remember the short wings digging in more than they should, making the center ride up. It could be the linkage for the up and down need to be adjusted on mine though. Like I said, never use it anymore but someday I should see if I can get those turnbuckles to move.

That's a really old disk. It's at least 35 years old. Age isn't everything and parts are still available... .just saying. Built in Canton, Illinois. I have had two 490s.....a 21 and 25 footer. Both leveled better than the 496 I had.

I have a 20' 490 and I like the job it does. I use it cornstalks in the fall like a lot of guys use a vertical tillage tool and I think it works better. If your looking to bury stalks you'll be disappointed, but it does chop out the rootball and pins down the residue so it doesn't blow away which is what I'm going for. I've used it a few times in the spring and it does a good job at leaving things level so I don't have to make several passes afterwards.

North End I-15
Have a 28' 490 bought it used in 78 . I think it is a 10" was used for seed bed prep back in tillage days . I pulled a oscillating "Crazy "Harrow behind . About 4.5 to 5 MPH. Made beautiful seed bed .
It's used for alfalfa seed bed prep now so very little use any more.
