Subject: Opinions on GENSCO tires for tractor rears?

Marion, TX
Hey All -

I need to replace my two worn out 18.4x34 rear tires on my JD 6403. I'm in an area that's loaded with mesquite thorns and want a good "won't go flat" tire solution. I currently have foam filled tires all around. My tractor is mainly used with a Turbo Saw on the back end to cut huisache and mesquite for land clearing. A couple of times a year it will pull a plow and a planter over a 10 acre field, but that's about the extent of the field/crop related work.

I priced new Firestone tires, with foam fill, and the cost was north of $4K. Cheaper tires were north of $2.6K, foam filled.

Internet research led me to Gensco tires and they tout their tires that are thorn puncture resistant. I called them up and was told that the tires are 14 ply, tread and sidewall, and a mesquite thorn will not penetrate. The tires, brand new are $563 each.

Has anybody used these for my type of application? Anybody had a flat?

Thanks -

Christopher

I bought Gensco tires for my JD ripper. They were junk. Rotten old airplane tires.

Tire Gard is a liner belt about 1/2" thick. It goes in the tire, then you use an inner tube to hold it in place. Since the liner is not part of the tire, it will flex in with a sharp object, and not puncture the tube. I have them in the rears of one of my tractors. I've not had any flats since. They do not protect the sidewall. http://tiregard.net/agriculture/

For thorns I've had the best luck going tubeless and putting in tire sealant from gensco.

For fronts the airplane tires are hard and ride rough.

I thought gensco has been advertising brand new tractor tires with normal tread and lots of plys lately. Didn't know they were that cheap.

I run tubeless with sealer, pull a brush rake and rome plow. A 10 year old radial seems to be about as good as it gets, I'm sure thats not easy to find in your size.

When I spoke to the salesman at Gensco, he told me that this particular tire was a new tire, which they have manufactured for them. He did not state who made the tires, and I didn't think to ask. He said that it was not an old tire which had been re-tread.

That low price of $563 still has me very interested, considering that these tires will get pretty light use, especially compared to pulling a brush rake and most certainly, a rome plow. But I'll continue to research.....

I appreciate everybody's input....keep it coming.
