North Central Iowa

Any advantage to going to two 12 volts vs the orignal 6's.

TIA,

Matt

I think the biggest advantage of going to two 12V batteries would be switching to group 31 stud post batteries in order to have battery cable ends that are easier to keep in good shape.

Would also cause less confusion if you have someone working for you who is confused by such things and hooks a charger or jumper cables up wrong because of it.

Otherwise I suspect it's 6 in one, half dozen in the other if your cables and starter are in good shape.

Yea the 12v last longer or at least have a longer warranty. If it were mine it'd have one 12v, half the batteries equals half the battery trouble, but I don't have much winter. Put one of those dinky little gear reduction starters on if you want it to start easy.

I agree with dpilot83. I changed my 4430 over this spring except I installed just one group 31 battery on the left side with new cables made of 2-0 welding cable. Two group 31's are cheaper than the six volts and available everywhere. My tractor doesn't get any winter use so I just used one battery and it starts better than ever. I would never go back to the six volts, we'll save them for Model T's.

One group 31 stud top in a 4440 and 4650 for 2 years now and no problems. Use the 4440 in the winter some but usually plug it in if its needed.

Sorry some might be tired of seeing this referenced but here is the post I made on going to a single 12 volt group 31 battery on my 4040 and new 2/0 welding cables plus installation of a disconnect switch.

Also gave cost comparison on going back to OEM setup vs what I did.

Still very pleased with my conversion.

I changed out two six volts for one 12 volt and so far have been happy with it. Tractor it is in doesn't get a whole lot of winter use and I always plug it in if I am planning on needing it.

Yes, go get battery cables for a 4455 or look up the design if you use the stud style and make some. I have done several this way using 55 series cable. If a 4640 get cables for a 4555.

1 group 31 stud style battery in the left box and 2 short cables. I have 3 4430s and a 4250 set up that way, works great, we use the 4430 with the loader in the winter and plug it in,always starts fine. Gets rid of the old cable fire hazard under the cab.

It can depend on the cranking and cold cranking amps of the two options. And the quality of available 6 volt batteries and how long they have sat on the store shelf without being charged. Batteries that have sat on the shelf for half a year are on their way to being junk. There isn't much demand for 6 volt batteries these days so they don't get made so often and tend to sit on store shelves a long time.

Two 6 volt batteries in series add the voltage but the cranking and cold cranking amps are what ever the weakest of the two batteries can deliver. Then with one 12 volt battery the cranking and cold cranking amps are what that battery can do. With two 12 volt batteries in parallel, the cranking amps and cold cranking amps are the sums of the individual batteries ratings providing the cables are not limiting the cranking and cold cranking amps.

These days the selection of 12 volt batteries is practically every battery in the store with maybe one model of 6 volt battery.

In buying batteries it pays to learn to read the manufacturer's date coding and to dig into the kiosk to get the most recently made batteries preferably no more than a month old.
