I'm redoing the decks on a couple small hay wagons. What is a good width for the deck? The original old boards were 8 1/2 feet. I found that to be a little on the wide side... Thanks. Wagons will be used for small squares.

Exactly, build it to suit your bales.

Wider is better than narrow. We stack on 8' deck with two three foot bales and one turned sideways to tie stack together.

These are old 40 cotton trailers. They are 40 ft long. As pictured there are 340 bales.

We now stack 6 to a tier instead of 5. When we stacked 5 to a tier we would go 7 high. Its much easier for us to unload when they are 6 high. So to answer your question I want 9 foot wide or so.

Our wagons are 8 x 20 and haul 200 bales in a nice square load. They will also haul 11 4 x 5 rounds very well. They are on eight ton gears, use three 2 x10's for each stringer with 2 x 12's perpendicular for the floor with a 2 x 4 along he edge. All wood is treated and everything is either bolted or screwed together. They have been abused for about eight years now and are still going strong. Had about $500 per wagon in materials for the beds.

Me and our boys built 9'x18' out of oak 4 years ago. 6"x8"x18' stringers, 4"x6"x9' cross bars, 2"x12"x12' deck planks with 1 1/2" spacing between each plank, all bolted together on 10 ton wagon.

Would have made it 8' wide for small squares, also use the wagon to haul 8 - 5'x6' round bales.

When I build a new rack i always put a strip of aluminum flashing over top of the stringers. Should be about 2 inches wider than stringer. Keeps moisture off stringer. Helps them last longer.

3x10 bridge plank stringers, w/ 2 3x10 between to keep stringers from rolling (the 3x10s over 3.25 X as strong as a 6x6 and you need to get the deck height above the wheels)
2x10 or 2x12 deck boards screwed to stringers with 5/16"x4" structural torx lag screws
2x2x1/8 perimeter angle iron with 1-1/4x1/8 flat under boards match drilled to angle iron
5x3x3/16 back supports that are removable and tied into stringers with 20" of 4x1/4 flat steel and half dozen 1/2" bolts. Top of back is leaned back about 5" which helps with stacking, no need to pull bottom layer out to lean into stack.

Build them in several sizes from 8x14 up to 10x24 (bigger stringers on longer racks)

I will say that when stacking on a flat rack shorter and wider are preferred over longer, i.e a 8x24 and a 10x20 will hold about the same amount per layer and effor to load a 8x24 is almost double a 10x20 since the back tier is so far back.
Last fall we filled our 9.5x20 with 288 corn stalk bales (6 per layer, 8 high, 6 tiers). Our other racks are 8x16'8" since it works out to space boards 1" and have a little over hang on front.

Attached a couple pics. FWIW we have sold close to 20 racks in the last 4 years to several people, so I figure they must like our design. We get about $1500 for an 8x16 with back and rear hitch (customer provides running gear)

Edit to add:
Our backs are removable with the (4) 3/4" bolts. It is nice to be able to take the backs off at times, like when we had sheds tinned and hauled the tin around on the racks or when building continuous fence and hauled panels around on wagon in wetter ground.
