Subject: Gehl skid loader questions

Southwest MN

Been looking at skidloaders first choice was a case 440 but they are running way higher than my 15k budget or less.

Anyway found a gehl 4835sxt that looks pretty nice. I like the machine for the most part but looking for the bad things with these machines. And what to look for. That i might have missed especially with the oil cooled engines.
I would ask on machinery talk but value the responses from the people who use their machines the way I will.

Gehl skid loaders are bullet proof. Deutz oil cooled are good engines. You won't be upset. Except you didn't get a bigger one. We are all John Deere except gehl skid loaders.

I assume you are aware of the funky controls on the Gehl compared to the Case. That's the main thing that would scare me off.

All in what you're used to. I can fly with Gehl T bars, I'm like a hog on ice in a Case I can run one if I have to but everybody needs to lookout.

I like our bobcat, sideways motor makes it a pain if you gotta work on it but I haven't had to do much to it in 3,500 hours so far. Makes it a shorter length machine for tight quarters if that's an concern for you. Ours has a switch so you can run it hand controls or foot controls whichever you prefer.

I have a gehl 5640 with a duetz oil cooled engine with about 3200 hours and have had nothing major go wrong. I have always had gehl so am used to their controls and haven't got used to any others. I feel the duetz engine gets better fuel economy than my newer 5640 that has a different engine.

This loader has case style controls similar to a 1845 case. Which is my main reason I even considered it. I like the bobcat acs better than true case controls but requires pretty much all bells and whistles to get ACS in a bobcat. Not to mention about $6000 morr for compareable hours

If it has the 3 cylinder Deutz I would stay away, get one with the 4 cylinder. The other thing is that some of the early 35 series would inch when parked, ours does. I have a 4835, it is 17 years old with 4500 hrs and has held up pretty good, but seems to have given more trouble the last couple years. Since it is oil cooled there is no block heated just an oil pan heater, it can be hard to get started when it gets below zero.

Really like ours. Got a older smaller gas one we don't use any more but running a 5635 now. I think you could findo a 56xx or 66xx for about the same money. We really like the T bar controls, not a fan of case controls and could live with pilot controls. We haven't had a major break down yet and ours has 3300 hrs.

Have to go to china to find a dealer anymore. I grew up with Gehls..........2500, 4400, and ran 3510's and 4835's.....................Made the switch to an A series Cat, would never return to a Gehl now. Don't miss standing on my head to work on them that is for sure, especially the gas ones, but they did do alot of work.

I have a 4635 sxt. Only about 1200 hours on it but runs like a top and will start with a bump of the key even in the dead of winter. I left it sit outside in the rain one night and the glow plug relay started on fire, but that's the only real issue I've had. My dad has had 5-6 over the years, I ran a 5640e of my uncles this morning with almost 7k hours on it. Alot of the dairies in my area have gehl, that should speak for itself.

We had an older 35 series Gehl for a while which was before my time, but served us well for many years. From that we upgraded to a 3640 which had a few issues, and then upgraded to a 4240 which has almost 4000 hours on now. Next one will most likely be another Gehl. Most dairies around here have them and don't have many issues with the conditions they run in.
