I had a 5288 for many years. Had 1700 hours on when I bought it. Had 5500 hours when traded it off. Great tractor pulled the h--l out of it. Pulled 5-18s plow great. IH should have skipped the 86 series and went to them. Never had much troubles with it. Wish I would have keep it.

I have a 5488 that dad bought new in 84. It has 15,000 hours on it. Overhauled at 10,000 due to electrolysis. That is the only major repair that has been done.

88's "can" be good tractors, we had several.
They can also be money pits, especially if the tranny starts giving problems, but if you got to spend a few thousand dollars, you still got a good machine.

A lot of parts are NLA.

I had a 5488. Wasn't a bad tractor to operate but I stuck a lot of money into it trying to get power to the ground and never did get it to hook in. I bought a Steiger and wondered why I didn't do that to begin with. I replaced a 1466 with the 5488.

That said it worked fine as a planter, hay cutting and round baling tractor.

I don't have anything good or bad, but a story for you. Around 1983, my dad was shopping for a new 80-90 hp tractor. He ended up buying a JD 2950. I remember going with him to Newton to look at new Internationals. They had a new left over 886, and a 3288. The main thing I remember about the tractors was the engine sound. The IH's sounded much better than the Deere. He didn't buy the IH because the salesman didn't really like the new series with the fan shaft through the radiator. Also, things just didn't look good at IH dealers. Kind of dead around there. The Deere dealers were moving a lot more equipment. Soon after we found out what was going on when Case took over. I still wish he had bought the 3288. It was a good looking and sounding tractor.

if you buy an 88 series, it is best to be stopped before shifting to neutral, park lever in those is anxious to get into park and could cause a problem if still moving.

but buy it right compared to a magnum. and that varies upon condition so I aint throwin any number out

If you are a red guy and conditioned to the IH idea of normal you will probably like it. I never felt comfortable in the tractor.

Some of the things that I remember that I did not like.
1)Fan shaft through radiator/hot air blowing out the front of the tractor.
2)Reverse opening doors.
3)Poorly laid out controls beside seats, snagging clothes on levers entering and leaving.
4)Front axle/steering had at least twice the moving parts necessary. Unfortunately this idea transferred to the Magnum.
5)Front axle king pins/steering arms continually wanted to loosen up.

Engine ran nice. Good power once it woke up at 2500 rpm. Double shaft PTO was convenient.

I'm sure they are good tractors, but the problem at this point is the fact that the transmission at some point will be an issue... some Parts are unavailable.....

Have 5288 since 06. I love it. Been very good to me. It doesn't have a hard life here. Used on grain cart for about 4 years till 3788 came along. Main job is planting and side dressing. Put a air ride seat in. Love the reverse air flow. I'm doing more cover crops and much easier to keep rad. clean with air coming in the top. Put the K&M kit to open door wider, works great. Also put the K&M steps on, much wider and so easy to get in and out. Love the tractor, should be around here for a long time.
