Subject: Case-IH MX170: are they any good?

I've been kicking around replacing my baler tractor for a couple of years(IH5288), but it ran and was cheap. Well now it's got to go as it apparently scored a piston and I'm ready to be done with it. A JD7800 is probably my first choice. However I'm struggling to find anything decent under $45k which seems high for for a tractor built in the early 90's.

I was browsing and started to see a few Case IH MX170 for decent money. I'm looking for any and all info that anyone can give me on them? Are they reliable, any know issues, motor/trans life expectancy and anything else that should make me consider one or run away from them. This will be a tractor for a 3x3 baler, so it would need a very stout PTO.

TIA

I don't know anything about them. I did notice that on tractorhouse 8 of the 10 listed are European models. Seems like they are always cheaper.

I have an MX170 and also just bought an MX150 if that says anything. I would say the 150/170 aren't quite as stout a tractor as an 88 IH or first gen Magnum, but they are nicer to drive in my opinion. Engines are pretty much bullet proof as they are the CDC 5.9. Trans is always a 16 speed partial power shift, pretty solid but the powershift might need work once the hours get higher. When is anybodys guess. Coupling between engine and trans might need to be freshened up at some point. Park brake is a weak point kind of. They last okay but will get toasted if somebody drives it with the brake applied. PTO has the reversible 1000/540 shaft of the smaller MXs in the housing of a first gen Magnum. MFD version weighs about 16000 lbs. My opinion is they would work on a 3x3 but would be as small as you'd want to go. I think the 7800 would be a bit more tractor.

I'd keep looking. You should be able to find a 7800-7810 in that price. I've ran a JD 7420 mfwd, one of those would be as or more capable than a 5288, and should be in the $35-50k range easily. Local guy bought a 7820 that was a little rough, but 5k hours and runs decent for $40-50 range.

I know nothing about a MX 170, just saying I think you can find what you want for that price.

Were the 7420s severely under rated on HP? I thought they were like 125 PTO hp is all?

How about a 71,72,89 series magnum? They are a heavy tractor and have a good history. I've been very happy with mine. Have had a couple of them.
