Do any of you use a different hydro oil than what Grasshopper sells? ($20 some/ qt) If so, what do you use?

I just bought a quart from my grasshopper dealer the other day. Parts man claimed it is 15w50 synthetic mobile. I can't verify, but that's what I was told.

That is what I run in them. 20W50 also works but the 15 is better when used for snow removal on grasshoppers, most other makes aren't run in the winter.

We have an older gentleman here who used to work at the grasshopper mfg plant. He now has his own shop to work on them. He told me it is mobile synthetic i think 15-40 not real sure on the viscosity.

Interested in replies.

I need to change mine also, I've been threatening to use CIH Hy-Tran. Ask most any hydraulic rebuild shop and the consensus is Hy-Tran is the best hydrostatic oil ever made, and no they don't sell it or get paid to say that. And since its been improved to withstand 7000+ psi in CVT's, surely it would work fine in a stupid lawnmower.

Is this for a 600 series or a 700 series? They call for different oils. The 700's will take the same hydraulic oil you use in a tractor or combine.

What about the 900 series Grasshoppers? We have a 935D. I have always used Grasshopper's hydro fluid. It seems high priced but no more than it takes & no more often than it needs to be changed I never thought that much about it.

Find out what transaxle is in it and poke around. 20W-50 motor oil is popular, as is 0W-40. The guy that chases parts for our shop got some Mobil hydraulic oil for older Woods machines built by Grasshopper because we couldn't stand the price of the Woods oil.

Grasshopper Mower owners, don't pay 15 dollars a quart for your Hydrostat Oil every 1,000 hours!! We have in stock the AMSOIL Full Synthetic Oil perfect for your machine at almost half the cost!!

Excellent Protection in Temperature Extremes

AMSOIL Synthetic Tractor Hydraulic/Transmission Oil operates over a wide range of temperatures. It has a high viscosity index to maintain its lubricity for wear protection at high operating temperatures, and it flows at temperatures down to -58°F (-50°C) for improved equipment operation at low temperatures. Synthetic Tractor Hydraulic/Transmission Oil replaces both Case New Holland 3525 and 3526 (formerly FordNew Holland FNHA-2-C-200 & 2-C-201) and John Deere J20C & J20D, helping eliminate the need for seasonal oil changes.

Smooth Brake Operation

AMSOIL Synthetic Tractor Hydraulic/Transmission Oil is formulated with durable friction-modifier additives that effectively suppress wet-brake chatter. Unlike lower-quality oils that can break down and cause vibration, AMSOIL Synthetic Tractor Hydraulic/Transmission Oil provides continuous frictional stability for long-term smooth brake operation.

Looks like $11.40 per quart retail. That's what the Amsoil website has it listed at. I've heard there is or was a coupon for their products, but not certain if that's only for motor oil or what.
