Does a 4840 have 100mm axles and will dual hubs fit from a 7000 series tractor? Thanks

Yes, a 4840 is 100 mm or 4". If by 7000 series you mean a 7800, then no the axles are not the same size. The 7800 would have 92 mm or 3 5/8" axles like a 4440/50/55. A large 7020 or 7030 might have 100 mm axles though.

The dual hubs would work if you changed the sleeves.

Btw, did you get that 4840 you were going to look at?

I bought the second one I looked at yesterday, nice clean tractor, new rear tires, original big fronts go with it, they're barely used, QH. $15000 spent on the powershift and rear end recently, has 10000 hours, pan has been off and I'm hoping it's had rods and mains because I won't have a chance to check until next winter. Is there any other reason to have had the pan off ? Paid $17000.....all it has to do is pull 12 row planter.

Sounds like a fair deal, hopefully the engine is strong yet. You could take an oil analysis to help see what you have. The typical reasons to take off the pan that I know of are bearings, oil pump or leaking gasket. As a side note, my dad bought a new 1982 4840 that I located a couple years ago that I would love to have back someday. 4840's are one my favorite JD models. It's somewhere around Waverly IIRC.

I assume you are thinking about planting with singles rear wheels at 120” spacing.
