5-7.5 yard capacity, will be pulled by 4630, 8285R or a 8360RT. Will be used in feedyard and doing some erosion repairs. Could be hauling dirt up to 1/2 mile at times, but mostly short hauls. Do not want to spend over 16k. What to look for? Any brands stand out as trouble free? Any brands or models to stay away from?

We have a 1200 holecomb whish has been excellent. It's a 12 yard we pull with an 8430 mfwd. I believe they also make an 800 model.

x2. Holcomb 1200 is a good all around farm machine. It wouldn't have the longevity to be used 24/7 for a living, but built plenty well. I would not get smaller than 12 yard for those tractors mentioned. After about 10 trips with an 8 yard machine, you would regret it.

If new, shut your eyes and save your money until you can buy an Ashland.

If looking for a steal on a used one, look for a Miskin. It may take a while, but they are undervalued.

Or something like this?

I have bought several scrapers off Craigslist with good results. They are out there if you are patient and ready to jump.

Yeah Ashland is good machine. We have 13yd that's for sale. However like olivetrode said they are more coin. We bought a 17yd so that's reason for selling.

We have converted 2 Cat cable scrapers to hydraulic. I figure we have about 10k in the last one we did, but that included a lot of steel to make it a direct mount.

I have a 41/2 modified to over 5yard LePlant Choate (pre 1953 takeover by Allice Chalmers) Brutally stout. 718 has a c108 conversation and I'm still hunting for the same.

Rowse make a smaller cheaper scraper. but I pry wouldn't hook any 8r on it. I use an old miskin 7 yard for fixing ditches in fields.

Bought a used Ashland 11yd and love it. Works best with 200 hp fwa but can be pulled with a 4440 in a pinch and if not moving dirt far. You don't need much hp to fill first 1/2. I used our 8335r to build a shed base and hauled dirt over a 1 mile and a 1/2 one way. Took clay from a hill for fill and hauled black dirt back. Amazing how fast it went. Was going to use a dump truck and a excavator but scraper was much faster even with distance.
I like the Ashland because of their reputation and ease of getting parts. Easy to repair wear parts and fairly priced. I gave 20000 for mine when corn was 7$ probably could find one close to 16000 now. We don't use it a lot but won't part with it as when we do need it is invaluable.
