Subject: dry fertilizer spreader

Looking to purchase a used, small 5 or 6 ton, pull type dry fertilizer spreader. Was looking at possibly a Willmar but was wondering what other manufacturers were out there and what people thought were the best? Primarily spreading 11-52-0 or 46-0-0 with it. What are the key wear areas to look at when checking over a used unit? TIA

Where are you located? Have one for sale
Basically whatever brand you buy, I would try to get one with a stainless steel box. And look to see if the frame is rusted out underneath. Bearings etc are fairly easy and cheap to fix

I just rebuilt a 8 ton Willmar last year. We changed every bearing just to be safe.. Check that the cross members under the spreader box are not rotted to nothing. I ended up rebuilding the whole frame under the box. Check that if it has brakes that they are functional or not a problem. All in I believe we spent a few thousand on new bearings, misc parts, and steel to get it back to running.

On a side note, you can buy any individual part on a Willmar if you get with your dealer. If it is a piece of bent metal, they will be able to order it. As a Deere guy, I was very impressed with AGCO on that one...

Have a Tyler, SS box and apron chain. Rest of the frame is regular steel, mostly re-plated or patched by me or the previous owner. I needed new spinners a few years ago, after some searching on the net I found a place in the south that I was able to get parts. Most of the other replaceable things are common that can be found at most any farm supply "box store" over-all pleased. Based on what I have in it now, and the acres I spread, it is paid for. However due to time issue in the spring (one man operation) I have the local CoOp spread 80-90% of my needs.

We've always had Chandler.  BBI is a similar unit.  Newton Crouch seems to be more of a Cadillac and we hear very good things.  I know with Chandler bearings are all standard sizes and can generally even get them at our Deere dealer at as good a price as anywhere.  Local industrial bearing place even carries extreme duty very high quality but you pay for it.  Chandler is close to us so can get stuff fairly quick.

I use a doyle from Helena every year on 1400-2000a. Its usually trouble free but i don't take care of it in the off season. Holds 4.5-5 tons

It would be a plus if the drive chain has hydraulic engagement instead of a rope pull. I have to admit that this is all based on 5 ton Wilmar spreaders, I don't know what the other brands use.

The doyle has belts and gear box. Can be activated by hydro or manual.
