Subject: 2955 Clucth Pedal Problems???

Illinois
John Deere 2955 MFWD has been a good tractor. End of last fall the clutch pedal would not come back to normal position after pressing it down. It would come about halfway up and at times when pressing it down again, it felt like bleeding brakes as there was minimal resistance in the travel. I have even had the pedal come back halfway up and tractor still moving forward, I watched the pedal suck itself back down to the floor. The tractor was still moving forward the whole time.

Sometimes the pedal will work fine and then other times the pedal refuses to come back off the floor or only go halfway up. I have not been able to replicate it consistently. The clutch pedal has a hydraulic reservoir and the fluid is full, so its not leaking somewhere externally. The manual talks about bleeding that line/system and I did that, but the problem still shows up.

Anyone else ever experienced this?
Is my clutch going out?
Could it be the master or slave cylinder?
Anyway to diagnose whether it is the master or the slave without throwing new parts on to test?

I am leaning towards replacing the master cylinder but its free to check on here before spending money on something that might not fix the problem

Any assistance is appreciated.

Have 3255. Never had your problem. JD did have a recall on my tractor for replacement of the clutch slave cylinder. I had mine done.

These tractors are known for clutch actuation problems. I am not sure of the details, but it seems it has a hydraulic clutch with an assist from the main hydraulics. And the slave cylinder is buried deep inside the tractor. You need to talk to a good JD tech who knows these Mannheim made tractors.

I bet a finger on your clutch pressure plate is gone, or nearly gone.
Second thing is the slave cylinder probably has a ridge worn in the piston, and the seals are getting hung up on them.

Either way, It should be split to see what's going on. Hate for it to fail and not disengage and cause an accident.

My 2940 use to get air in the system and I've never seen one you could bleed like the manual says. I always had to take an oil can and put a hose one it and back bleed oil thru the bleeder screw.
