Thinking about a grain cart. Were the deere carts any good? Areas to look at? Local dealer has one, seems to be reasonably priced. Sto here, doesn't need to be fancy. Thanks.

West Union, Illinois

When I Goggled John Deere cart the typical hit looked like this

I'm assuming that isn't what you want.  When I searched for John Deere grain cart I got a lot more choices, most of which I have never seen around here.  In this area when you say old Deere grain cart everyone thinks one like this

If that is what you are looking at, look very closely.  Most are worn out. (in fact one looking as nice as this would be suspicious around here.  It looks WAY too nice) There are at least 2 down sides to them.
1) you cannot shut off the grain flow.  Once you start unloading you can't fold the auger until it is empty.  Also starting with a full auger may cause problems.  If you can start the PTO slowly and gently you'll be OK. Wind up the engine and slam it in gear and something may give.
2) they do not have much reach. The auger was designed for a low sided single axle truck. A semi with high sides might be a difficulty. At one time we had a 12010a and a J&M 525.  To load the local elevator's semi you had to unload the Deere into the J&M.  It could not reach over the side unless conditions were just right, and they usually were not in the field.
3) (I said at least) The small wheels do not handle mud well.  Especially the slick aircraft tires they usually have on them.

That looks like one we had years ago made by UFT I believe it was. I agree with what previous poster said. They have a floor anger that angers grain to the front to the verical anger. We kept having problems with ours. I would suggest something like a Brent 420. They can be bought cheap and ours hasn't caused us any problems.

We had an orange united farm tools cart. 23 had dials strapped to it and extended. The auger will not reach over a semi. We purchased a 750 bushel Parker cart in 1997 and kept the UFt cart for 4 or 5 years thinking we could use both in the field. The little uft cart was pretty much not worth having in the field. It was small and took forever to unload.

They work if you want to have something to park at the end of the field as a place to dump.

Auger is not fast enough to keep up with a combine if dumping on the go.

We have a JD 500, made by UFT. Works good for us. It got new tires last year and finally a tarp this year. It would be nice to have a cart that held more at the end of the day, but this one is paid for.

If you don't want to spend much money and are going to treat it as you would any older piece of equipment you will be fine. Can usually find a decent one for around $3K. Not much more $ than a gravity wagon. Just a matter of what you need it to do.

We Have a 1210 and it works good. Not pretty but functional. We can load our Ravens dump trailer but you have to be tight against the auger to get it close to the middle. We don't use it much just when it's to wet to get in the field with trucks. we also use it when filling bins, just park a wagon at the auger. Works really good pulling with a 4430 but the airplane tires don't float at all. We paid 3000 for 4 years ago when we had a really wet fall, I think we only used it 2 out of 4 years but it's to handy to get rid of.

I think this one is a 500. Would it reach to dump into brent 544s? Would be nice to keep the wagons on solid ground without having to chase real far with the combine. Thanks for all the replies

We had a 1210 for 30 years.

Used it occasionally.

Had a good machine shop add 30" to the auger.

That was easier than I thought it would be.

Also added a chute to the stubby thing that it came with.

Yes a JD 500 grain cart will dump into a Brent 544 wagon just fine. we do it all the time with our John Deere 500 cart. We have had good luck with ours, we always are sure to change out the gear box oil each season. Not as fancy as some of the newer carts, but sure gets the job done here.

They also sold a 650

http://www.tractorhouse.com/listings/farm-equipment/for-sale/799863...

We have a 1210 and a UFT 500 for holding seed wheat. Bought both under $2K a piece. I believe the augers can be extended fairly easily as both of ours have been extended 2 ft.

The ones we bought for seed wheat storage at that price certainly aren't "field ready"

I dont think jd ever made their own carts. United farm tools made a lot of them. We have a 500, it's all I need works good. Neighbor has a 1210. 500 is definitely a better setup.

Nothing wrong with a cheap cart. I bought a 400 bushel Phares and Wilkins this fall for $1,400 and then put another $500 into a new drive shaft. It's nothing to write home about but in milo it's better than not having a cart, which is what we always done before.

Well, I was wrong. It's a 400. Will a 400 reach a brent 544?

FYI A good source for gearbox parts for the JD grain carts is an outfit called Grint Farm Supply. They were a lot cheaper than JD and have a web site that shows the parts breakdown for several models. Cleanout on the JD 500 is better than on the JD 1210.
