are they tempered steel just wondering if a guy could make his own heavy duty drawbar for pulling grain carts and such out of some steel bar. ive got a 1066 with the two piece drawbar i wish was the one piece. theres plenty of room to put a pretty thick piece of iron in there.

I think you are going to need something stronger than regular old mild steel bar stock like you would find at welding shop or steel supplier.
My guess it that some like T 1 steel which is high strength heat treated steel would work, but you need to talk to someone who really knows what he is talking about. Here is some info on T1 steel. http://pubsindex.trb.org/document/view/default.asp?lbid=100641

The Versatiles and Steigers of old were nothing special, just  a big hunkin' steel drawbar with hardened bushings in it....and our Challengers, too, for that matter.

When you use 2 pieces of 2" x 6" barstock, spaced about 6" apart,  you really don't need any fancy metalurgy.  As Stalin supposedly said, "quantity has a quality all it's own"

Don't know how thick your drawbar has to be but 1.5" AR400 plate is pretty common at machine shops around here for making root rakes and other toys for dozers and excavators.  It's very wear-resistant and stiff as anything- no playing with hardened bushings at the wear points.  I've never seen 2" AR400 before if you need it that thick though, but multiple layers of 1" might do it.  Might cost more to do it that way than buy a new one though, unless you can work with the AR400 yourself.

UP / Thumb of Michigan
Not familiar with your particular tractor, but many tractors that tow sugar beet harvesters have hitch support deals made up. I've seen many variations, but basically they put a plate under the hitch and run a chain up to a good point higher up on the tractor. I've seen some that were tied to the 3 point hitches, some tied to the lift arm pins when the 3 point was removed for PTO clearance. You may be able to get a better hitch at a salvage yard than what you have now if the measurements work out. Or build new. I'm thinking that won't be the cheapest way, but it'd pay to check.

Ever try drilling or enlarging a hole in a drawbar ? That will tell you a lot about the quality of steel they are made of. They are made to flex somewhat and not so hard that they will break as a rule.

Mid Michigan
I think the lower three point hitch arm of a big 4wd tractor would make a tremendous drawbar for somebody if it were turned on its side and mounted under the tractor. I was at the tractor salvage the other day and there were hundreds of them there and they are huge! They also alread have a catagory 3 hole with a swivel in them. I know they sure look like they could hold a heck of a load and the price is probably pretty reasonable. Most of them end up getting scrapped out anyway.

shoop when you say you ordered it, where did it come from? salvage yard? new from ih? how much you want for it? i havent called any salvage yards to see if they even have one let alone how much i just was thinking about makin my own. we had a 1466BS at one time that had the heavy drawbar. if its the same as that that would be alright.
