Subject: Skid Steer land plane

Western EC Iowa

I borrowed a land plane for a skid loader yesterday.  The kind with the cutting edge front and back, about 4 feet deep.  It worked great on both gravel and leveling dirt where I had some trenching done.  So, I started doing some research and came across this from DoMor.  It seems like it would be a bit better for carrying a little more material and maybe a bit more aggressive, but still not cut too deep.  Anyone have experience with both that could shed some light?  Thanks, Ben

I have a combo plane I grade yards with. Don't think I'd trade it for that domor piece. The domor might be alright for you grading a driveway and the occasional trench line though.

When you say combo plane, what are you referring to?

An MT combo plane. Like Cliff says a hydraulic tilt plate would be nice. I've only seen tilt plates on the combo planes without the ripper shanks. Don't know if that was a factory option or what. I use the shanks enough to justify them but a tilt plate would get used just as much or maybe more if mine had it.

Thanks.  Essentially the same thing that I used Sunday.  I kind of like the looks of the other one, but am concerned with HP requirements, plus it's double the cost.  Good info, thanks guys.  Ben

Probably a lot of what you get used to and you learn how to do things with what you got. One thing I notice with the domor is you wouldn't be able to push dirt right up to a house very easily. With mine I can push it right up to the house leaving a little mound, lift up, and set it on top of the mound to kind of smash it down and back drag it out. Also, I wish I got to work with the kind of dirt they have in their videos. Sure would make things easier. ;-)

The land plane I built using two 8" H beams for the back levelers is a nice compromise in my opinion, the H beams can carry quite a bit of material in front of them. I just wish I had built hydraulic tilt into mine to make it easier to put a crown on driveways or cut a trench for drainage.

Any idea where to find one of these Combo planes?  I need to grade some stuff around my yard and fill in some trenching messes around my pond.  Using a regular loader bucket is frustrating.  I'd like something that moves dirt side to side a bit as well.

I have one similar on the way from Jenkins Iron and Steel in MN. Lots of aftermarket options available.

Interesting that they put their shanks on forward. I wonder if there is any difference in going forwards or backwards. I always thought the sifting screen would be a good option to have. You can carry a decent amount of dirt on there.

If you don't mind me asking, what did it cost?

Hasn't been delivered.  I'm sure it will work fine, it's basically the same thing I borrowed.  Only difference I see is this one has the expanded metal.

Sounds reasonable enough. I would have guessed they were more.
