Subject: Vermeer 505L Monitor Erratic Bale Size

North Central Illinois
I have been running a 505L for several years now with the Accu Bale Monitor and net wrap. This summer it had a day where it started to fail to tie automatically at the proper size. The readout for bale size erratically jumped around, but so I just tied manually according to the size gauge on the baler itself. Then it started throwing an error code and wouldn't tie at all. I talked to the dealer and he suggested cleaning the connector to the tractor. After messing around with that, it stopped throwing the code, but still didn't tie automatically. I was able to finish baling the field though. I replaced the size sensor on the baler after that, as that seemed the next likely culprit. That did not solve the problem. I cleaned up the connector with spray cleaner for electrical connections again and it seemed to work for a little while, but bale size wasn't real consistent. I just baled a few corn stalks, and it is not working properly again. Now, in addition to erratically indicating bale size, it does not give the warning beep when it has nearly reached the tie point, and will not tie, even when it reaches the size setting it is supposed to tie at. I can still manually initiate the net wrap cyle, but that gets pretty old when dropping a bale every couple hundred feet.

So, the question is, should I be trying to find a problem in the harness or connections, or is the monitor itself likely to have a problem?

I have been seeing issues with I and L baler wiring harnesses this year. Most of the time I will trace down a broken wire in the harness. I would start checking the wires on the bale size circuit. Being an Accu-Bale it should have a rotary pot for bale size, which means it will have 3 wires for the sensor check continuity on those wires. Where the 3pt. arms pinch the harness on the driveline is a good place to check for wire issues.

It is most likely a harness issue. With the baler sitting still, unhook the bale size potentiometer and turn it manually. See if your size increases smoothly. If it does not unplug the potentiometer and bench test it. I can get more info if you need it. If you have the plastic plug between the tractor and baler, make sure your locking ring is in good shape.

Does your bale size reset to zero? There was a software bug on the early L monitors. If it does not, I can get reset info.

I replaced the potentiometer with no improvement. I have disconnected the link rod for the bale size indicator and moved it manually. The bale size on the monitor will return to zero, but not always at the same position of the indicator on the baler. Sometimes the monitor reads 0 when the baler gauge reads 2, while sometimes they both zero out at the same time.

The locking ring is broken on my connection, but I am able to get the connector to stay together.

So when the potentiometer is plugged in and bolted fast, it will occasionally return to zero? Can you test the potentiometer with an ohmmeter? You could have had a second faulty one(not likely). Here is somebody's video describing a throttle pot test that should be close enough. If the readout is random and you are fairly certain of your connection, it points to a bad voltage regulator in the monitor. It will need to be sent in for repair.

It will always return to zero, but where zero is varies.

That is very odd. That sounds like a monitor issue. There is one more thing to check to confirm it is internal. Check if you have consistent voltage to the potentiometer. I think it should be 5 volts on that baler, and it must not vary at all.

Does your dealer have a loaner to try?

Just an update in case anyone wonders the outcome. It is mostly working. I talked to my dealer and he is convinced it is the connector. He suggested I clean the connector contacts with PB blaster and make sure all of the pins were pushed all the way in. I baled 150 bales of stalks the last two days and it only misbehaved a couple times. Just as it triggered to tie (set at 29/50 gets me a 5' bale), it jumped back to the mid 20's, then back up again. I think the the connection is the issue, as cleaning it has improved things significantly.
