Subject: 1660 Wheat Settings

First combine we've owned and wondering if it's at all possible to get this configuration to work adequately in wheat. It appears it's setup primarily for corn and I understand cover plates, small wire concave, etc. would be the ideal setup but we have less than 20 acres of winter wheat. Does anybody have experience with trying a "corn" machine in wheat? What are your concave, sieve, fan, and rotor settings? Anything else I should look at adjusting? TIA

Current Setup: Standard rotor, toothed separator bars, Large Wire concaves, 3/8 in. bar grates, vanes in middle position, 1 5/8 in. corn chaffer sieve, 1 5/8 in. shoe sieve.

If your not wanting to change anything just set the rotor, concave, fan and sieves to settings listed in the book and get after it. If I intend on growing wheat in the future cover plates are very enexpensive and only take a few minutes to take in and out and actually help in a lot of situations with soybeans also.

You will probably need to cover the first concave with cover plates if you are using the corn concave. There is not enough steel to hold the crop to get it thrashed out without the covers.

I run large wire concaves on our 1480 and do some winter rye and spring barley you can get by without cover plates but you will always feel less than satisfied with the sample, night and day difference honce I started using 3 cover plates much more forgiving to set and I can make seed now.
