Subject: John Deere 5525 weak hydraulics

I have a friend that has a 2006 JD 5525 and he uses it for normal things along with planting a few acres with a 4 row 7300 vacuum planter. This year it's started acting like something is wrong with the hydraulics. When he tries to pick the planter up, it seems to bounce a little and is slow, plus it isn't really wanting to raise it all the way up. Any thoughts on this? hydraulic pump going out??

If he is running the vac. fan off a tractor remote he is over heating the hydraulic system and created the problem. Open center not compatible with vac. planters. Needs PTO pump system.

X10. A 5525 is a nice little utility tractor, but it doesn't have closed center hyd.

I would guess the pump needs to be replaced.. You need to check the relief pressure, and make sure its set correctly, and then flow test the pump. If it has mid mounts, check at the rear SCV's and the Mid Mount. Have seen issues with the fitting going to the rear SCV's from the Mid mount, but it was mostly on the 5M tractors.

On the motor.. how many acres is he planting?? The Operators manual talks about how to run a hydraulic motor on the 25 series tractors... No its not the best, and can easily over heat the hydraulic system. If you have the Deluxe SCV with flow control, that is better, and you control the speed of the motor with the SCV flow control valve.. Or Power Beyond.. with the standard SCV's you use the flow control valve on the planter... best if you have a flow control valve for an open center system that will by pass the un needed oil flow..

I believe his is planting 15-20 acres annually with it...not exactly sure though. I'll tell him what all you've said to check and maybe it will help. thanks

How is hydraulic level? Also check suction screen and filters.

That tractor has been lucky the hydraulics have lasted running that Vac fan or pump. That tractor is open center & not closed center. To run hyd motors you need closed center or the pto pump. Newer JD tractors did not start building their newer series with closed center till JD 6110 a 1998 to 2001 model. Most of the competition was building tractors for price competition & adding closed center is more expensive & most people using your tractor never see's a vac planter but in this case-your burning your hyd pump up or its shot already-you'll have to get a pto pump to run that 4 row planter or if He has a older JD like a 2510, 3010, 3020, 4010, 4020, 4030, 4230 & on up will do just great-they have closed center hyd. However the Red & other competition does not have closed center prior to about 1981 & some later.

He will have to overhaul his 5525 now just to do anything but it will not run that planter-either trade tractors up to a closed center tractor or trade planter for a corn finger planter or He can get a kit from Precision to change planter to a finger drive or get a PTO pump which is at least $2000 or find a neighbor with a closed center tractor. Lots of options. I used to sell JD for 25 yrs so have run into this in the past-farming now tho.

Yea, I had a 5525 also until this past fall and I sold it. I tried to run a 4 row planter on it also and decided that it was overheated the fluid and pump so I stopped. I did plant about 8 acres with it for 2 years in a row....hopefully I didn't damage it so the new owner has problems. I didn't notice any problems with it....but just got scared that I would damage something if I used it anymore like that. I've since purchased a 7410 JD and I really like it but I've been getting all the kinks worked out of it....leaks, etc that it had when I bought it. But I read a lot of great reviews regarding the 10 series tractors so that's why I went with it.

Thanks for the response and input.

Hydraulic level is fine....that's what I asked him first and he changes the filters, etc yearly...so that shouldn't the problem. Thanks for the response

I have run a 6 row White 6700 on 10 acres for several years now using a 5225 and have not had any trouble. It has the deluxe valves and the manual tells you how to set it for running a hydraulic motor on the number one remote only. I do not run the oil back in thru the remote so as not to over pressure the pump seals. I made my own free flowing return. I also use it to run my spray pump. Good luck.

Before all the expensive stuff everyone is talking about, assuming its a 3 point mounted model:

-did someone bump the draft control lever? Lots of folks don't use this feature or know what its for in todays world but its still there and in mixed mode acts like you are describing the hitch movement.

-did he move the fan off the scv with flow control? If its on the wrong scv not much oil available for hitch.

-Hydraulic motor on open centre - best is to leave it to run wide open without trying to regulate speed. ABSOLUTELY DONT USE ORIFICES TO SLOW IT DOWN. a flow divider will work to slow it down but it will generate some heat. Rotary flow divider is low heating but not variable split.
