Subject: Need to move full 1000 gal propane tank


Huntley Montana		Best way would be to have propane co pump it out. 2nd best? can I sling it with a  couple chains & pick it with my boom truck & put it on a trailer? Need to move 10 mi.

Nevada, Iowa		You didn't say what size. A 1000 gallon tank should weigh about 6000 lbs. when full.

The Farmers' Co-op in Sheridan moved our 1000 gal tank a little ways (to re-position it between the new house and the shop) when it had about 600gal in it. They have a propane tank trailer, which is a frame that allows them to put a couple of slings (not chains) under the tank about 3' in from each end and hoist it up on electric hoists. The hoists were at or near capacity and the 3" square steel tube frame wasn't real happy lifting that amount of weight.

I would not try to grab a full 1000' gal tank by the lifting hooks on top of the tank to pick it up.

Propane goes about 4.11 lbs/gal at 60 degrees F. Considering that a 1000 gal tank is rarely filled beyond 80% capacity (to allow expansion room in the heat of summer), so you're looking at something like 800 gal * 4.11 = 3,288#, plus the weight of the empty tank, which for a typical ASME steel tank is about  1800#.

Dallas Center IA 515-720-2463		I have a full 1000 gal tank that is leaning. Siting beside bins. Have not used any propane in years there.

Asked propane company about pumping it out to put into another tank. - Did not want to do it because it would cost a lot of money to pump out.

Then they said they can move it out of the way while it is full. Repair the pads or better move them a short ways. Then put the tank back.
All for a lot less than pumping it out.

Somerville, Indiana		Be careful of NH3 folks pumping the tank and keeping the gas. We had that happen and they denied taking it. Using the tank now for volume on the gas well.

Just FYI it is illegal to move with I believe more than 5 % in it.

 

That said I think I have heard of a couple moved before, just need big enough machinery!Wink

Can you do it?  Yes.  Should you? No. 

Any good propane company should be able to pump it out if the tank has the proper fittings. There is a possibility it can't be done, but very rare for that to happen.

Yes, it will cost a bit.  You have 2 trained employees (probably will take one guy to drive the bobtail and another to move the tank) with specialized equipment handling hazardous material. 

Don't forget that once the tank is moved the system it is connected to will need inspected and brought to code. Pumping out a tank, relocating it, checking out the new system, then filling it again are going to blow a day.

As Marc said, moving it full is illegal.  And whatever you do DO NOT PICK IT UP BY THE EARS.  They are not designed for a 6000 pound load and you risk pulling them out of the tank.  You do not want to be around if that happens.  If it has to be picked up full it needs straps going under it in 2-4 places.

Moving it around the farmstead or resetting a tank foundation is different than moving it 10 miles ... unless you can do it without crossing a road. 

It isn't rocket science but it does take time and the folks doing it need to know what they are doing.

Wyoming		I beg to differ: I strongly suspect that if you pick up a standard 1000 gal ASME tank that is full of propane by the ears, you will be engaging in rocket science, whether you want to or not. ;-)

Badger, Do you have another tank you can put it in if so, if the tank has a liquid valve let the pressure push most of it out into another tank, bleed a little pressure of in the "new" tank if need be just make sure you do it on a windy day or else get a valve from your propane supplier at will trip the fill valve and you and so the same just have a LPG hose with ACME fitting on each end it is actually quite simple. SW Ohio		Wouldn't the pressure equalize at close to 400 gal. each? I have filled small tanks that way. Takes some time. But I don't see how 800 gallons would move from one tank to the other?

Did you not catch this part of his comment - "pressure push most of it out into another tank, bleed a little pressure off in the "new" tank ". You can drain the entire contents of one tank into the other by letting pressure out of the tank you want the product to go into. We drove old LP tractors for years on the farm and the fill principle was pressure moving product from one tank to another.

SW Ohio		Thanks for the info. I see how that would work. How much do you loose to the air when you let off the pressure? How long to transfer 800 gal. by this method?

north central Oklahoma		I'm sure you would be losing some BTUs in some way, but very similar to how little one actually is losing when he sees white vapor coming out behind the NH3 knife. A thimble full of NH3 liquid I am told will make enough vapor to fill your car. As long as you don't see white vapor, which is liquid propane going to atmosphere, you will be losing a negligable amount.

Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.		It takes a while, but if the full tank gets more sunlight than the one you're trying to fill, it will eventually have very little liquid and the shady one will have most of it.

We had an 800 gallon LP tank by our drier. At the end of the fall season, Dad had it refilled. The following July on a very hot day, the safety valve popped off. It was very noisy. Called our supplier and they came right out with an empty truck and pumped off the LP. They then took the empty tank to the plant and replaced the valve. They returned the repaired tank and refilled it. They had to pump the tank because of the leaky valve but I remember them saying the tank had to be empty to move it.
