My dad bought one back when I was probably 3-4 years old. He used it some to check on his irrigation, and put a tow bar on it to move equipment with. After a few years he changed the single bucket seat to a bench seat and we could all ride. I remember how I was so thrilled on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon he would start it up and take us for a ride.

Late 1980s it got stored away, and didn't see any use for a long time. When I got old enough to work on stuff, I dug it out and spent quite a bit of time getting it running again. Then my brother and I had a lot of fun as teens tinkering on it and riding it around, modding it to get more power. A straight pipe exhaust added LOTS of HP. It had a Wisconsin Robbin motor that was tougher than nails.

Finally it had so many problems with the variable belt my brother ordered another universal one, and we cobbled it together, but it never worked right. Also the tires were rotted out. I think my dad finally hauled all the remains of it to the scrap yard a few years ago.

We had one back in the day. V belt drive gave quite a bit of trouble but we put a lot of miles on that thing. Rolled it a couple times but I don't think any one ever got seriously hurt.

Wow! My dad bought the kit with the bench seat for my older brother and sister. They rode it hard, but we got it going again when I was old enough to ride. I remember issues with the belt drive also. The Briggs engine has been removed, but the chassis is still sitting in our barn. Thanks.for the memories!

Nephew and I quickly realized if one of us stood on the hitch and held on to the roll bar you could catwalk that thing forever. Must have been early 70's. Thanks for the good memory!

Pick up the kit in Benton Harbor Mi. Our came with 295 cc Tecumseh 2 cycle, learned to order belts 2 at a time. It stayed in the neighbor hood for many years, three families after us, saw it about 10 years ago, different motor, some welding, painted j.d. Green and yellow. The last family lived a mile from us and 12 kids,

We had one. It was our first ATV. When you gunned it the suspension would come up in the middle. Didn't like the open differential. It got alot of use though.

I still have one in the shed. My older brothers bought it as kids with their bean walking money. They ran it so much the engine threw a rod out the side of the block hitting my oldest brother in the head. Thankfully he was smart enough to be wearing a helmet.

They are about 10 years older than me, so it got parked for several years until i got interested in it. I drove it all over the place before i got my license. I eventually managed to bend the jackshaft somehow.

That thing was a blast. Ours had the low bucket seat, so you sat down close to the ground like a chopper. The brakes never worked, so we drug our heels against the front tire to stop. The rear hubs were held onto the axles with roll pins that broke all the time, which caused the wheel to fall off resulting in a spin or a roll depending on speed. Exciting.

One of these days I'm going to put a motorcycle engine and brakes on it. THEN it'll be dangerous!

So much fun. Thanks for bringing it up!

My uncle near cresco ia had one so all the nieces and nephew could ride it when they came to visit. He had the optional ski that bolted under the front tire for snow. didn't work too good but sure was funny watching cousin trying to keep up with snowmobiles on trail rides. Remember starting it one day and throttle was stuck wide open. Shot across yard and hit hog lot cornerpost
flipped in the air. don't think it even hurt it.

I also remember something similar happening to my dad. It was right at the back porch, he started it and it lurched forward. Seems like he held back on it, and I think the choke might have been still closed so it wasn't pulling that hard. But it seemed like forever to a 5 year old watching dad struggling to keep it from coming through the back door and at the same time trying to reach the kill switch.

That happened to me once, too. Anyway, it took off, and I grabbed the rollbar before it got away, so there I am, holding a trike dancing on its two back wheels, gravel flying, and no way to shut it off. If I let it go, it would careen into one of the sheds and Dad would've killed me, so I had nothing to lose at that point. After what felt like an eternity (probably 5 seconds...) I grabbed the spark plug wire and yanked it off. Problem solved. Except my arm hurt for a week from the shock.

.
I thought I was the only one who ever heard of them. Yes, my dad and I built one back in the early 1970's. The variable speed clutch/pulley was a problem. We noticed when we first went to start it up that the machine wanted to lurch forward. Thought we had it taken care of and started using it. A few days later I took it way back down the field road and picked a basket of plums. Came back and as I approached the main road the dang belt grabbed and it wouldn't let go. Fortunately for me no cars coming. I shot straight across the road flying through the air, plums flying everywhere and landed hard in the field. The only good part was the suspension had plenty of give and I didn't fly off. My grandpa saw the whole thing and wanted to buy it from me just to get rid of it! As I remember we got a replacement clutch from Heald at no cost. I used it for a few years, but started having trouble with reliability and finally sold it. I know I have pictures somewhere, but no idea just where, Thanks for the crazy memories.
