Subject: Jari Mower

I picked up an old Jari Mower at an auction. I have no experience with these machines. I think it would be great for fence lines and around the buildings. I can load it in the truck and take it to where I need it. The sickle is in good shape (sections and guards look new). I had to put a different engine on it because it looks as though there wasn't enough room in the block for the connecting rod (it was thrown). It had a 3 1/2 hp Briggs on it. I put a 5 hp. Tecumseh on it. I realize there may be a RPM difference between the 2 engines ( no plates to go by). Now it seems to want to drive too fast. I like the way the sickle is running but the machine wants to drive so fast that it will choke the sickle out. I think a pulley change will cure the problem. There are separate drives for each component. The question is? Would it be better to change the main drive pulley size? Or, the driven pulley size to a smaller pulley. Also, I remember seeing somewhere that an owner put dual wheels on one for better balance. If anyone is familiar with these? I could use a little advice. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

I don't know much about the mower but I do know putting a smaller pulley on the driven side will make it run faster, not slower. Phil

Dad bought a used Jari for me to use around the dooryard some 50+ years ago. On that model there was no disconnect for the sickle. It ran whenever the motor was running. There was a clutch system for the forward motion. The drive was a roller that was run with a round belt. As you pulled the handle back, the roller would engage the wheels. It had single wheels which were bicycle tires that were close together. This made the unit quite tippy.

Not being able to stop the sickle was a bad idea. I remember trying to cut close to a woven wire fence around the dooryard. If the sickle caught the wire, your only option was to kill the motor.

They probably made some improvements in the last 50 years. As the other poster mentioned, to slow down the forward speed you need a smaller pulley on the Drive or a large one on the Driven.

This appears to be a dead ringer for the one Dad bought. Since the engine sat at an angle, there was an adapter (about 30 degrees) that allowed the carb to run in a straight up and down position.

These old sickle bar mowers like the Jari and the ones that TroyBuilt sold for a while are really not a good design. The reciprocating motion of the sickle shakes everything apart and the sickle does a pretty poor job of mowing at that. A rotary mower or string trimmer is a much better idea and it does not shake itself apart.

SORRY, but I HATED mine.
I bought used Jari once. Got it up and running and cut a half hour and it was time for it to leave the yard. It was in real good shape and I knew why. TUFF weeds were more than it could pull itself through at the ridiculous high speed it traveled. The thing (sickle drive)was so out of balance that it hurt my hands to hold on to it. It looked like the real deal to cut down tall weeds but they would only hang over top of the motor compartment and cause issues. I never even started that motor twice before I sole it again.
