Subject: Project 4230 John Deere

Wisconsin

Hello all- I've done quite a bit of reading on some of these questions, but wanted to get some feedback on if you would do it again, or how you'd do it different... thanks in advance for the input...I'm looking for it.

We have an old 4230 John Deere that is apparently staying around for a while, so we have brought it in the shop for some work. Currently on the list of To Do's is: AC, Radio, Cab Kit, Seat, Roof, Door...

AC- it has the old R12 compressor still on it- was thinking of ordering that complete line and compressor kit from Abilene Machine- has anyone used it, and would they do it again? Is their a better source? $700 for lines and all seemed dang reasonable...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-AC-Compressor-Conversion-Kit-R12-to-R134a-John-Deere-4030-4040-4230-4430-/251505812898?hash=item3a8eea25a2:g:8dEAAOxy0x1TTU~C

Radio- it is an old 4230- two rear speakers- both out in this case- what is a good source for those? Is OEM the best route? I believe the head unit to be fine.

Cab kit- I'm apparently beating a dead horse here- is this tractor worth putting a material down before the cab kit- for noise and insulation dampening? I am down to bare metal right now so there's no time like the present I guess- the materials I looked at are the "Dynamat" style.

Seat- like I said it's old- no hydracushion here- old suspension yellow-pretty much a 20 series seat- we thought about an upgrade- some don't seem to think that the air was a good idea- is that still accurate?  What is a good solution for this? original? Shoup has this one...its on the high side for my budget, but I'd like some feedback first.  http://www.shoupparts.com/DR440/

Roof-current one is old and cracked beyond any repair- are all of the replacements the same?  Anyone had a bad experience or should I just pick one and go with it?

Door- Current one has been bent and welded- time for a new one- what is the best route- anyone satisfied with one more than the other?  OEM best?

Thanks again.

I would put in late 30 series cloth seat. Have owned them both. For what it is worth I would take the cloth seat I had in 1976 4630 over the air ride seat in my Magnum 7140.

If the cab roof is all there, it isn't beyond saving.  Rough it up good with coarse sandpaper and put two layers of fiberglass over it.

I stuck a new Deere air ride seat in our early 4430 several years back. Changed over from spring ride. Best money spent on that girl. I'd do it again without question.

I put this conversion kit in our 4430 last summer. I put new blower motors in at the same time and put in the three speed switch like the 40 series have. AP Air had everything I needed.

I didn't look at the A/C kit but I know Deere sells stainless steel lines I'd look into that. Money well spent. Everybody knows how crappy those steel lines on a sound hard cab are.

Just got done installing a Fehr cab kit and a JD air seat in an early 4430 (narrow set well). Turned out very nice in my opinion. I did opt with a 40 series floormat while I was at it. When it was all said and done it feels like a new tractor, much quieter, and no payments.

Sounds like you are doing all the correct things. I would also suggest putting some new cab mount rubbers . Or maybe see if the 40 series will work if you weld the ring on there ,never done it before but just a though. Post some photos on your project however take heaps of photos.

First pick 4230 tricyle converted to a HiTricycle 10 foot centres
Done a 4040 and made it a Hi-crop this machine is a credit to my two apprentices at the time. The quickest and least expensive and the best quality is to pull the cab and panels and have them sandblasted not a home sandblaster a proper one. Put on some quality 2 pack primer filler . The cab looks better with the light colored cab not black . Fit and in cab master switch

I just replaced the outside roof on my 2940 with a piece from Shoup, nice finish. Some of the required holes to mount fixtures to required applying the pop rivets in a definite sequence. By definite sequence I mean that if you finished the pop rivet squeeze before installing the other rivet, sometimes it required removing a finished rivet then aligning both rivets before squeezing them shut. The large holes for the lift bolts where just barely off and required a slightly shaved for the holes.

When I started to install the headliner (a Fehr piece thru Shoup), I had to remove the three windows to access the screws that hold the headliner up. The instructions said to loosen bolts with the windows open. I can get the windows down by myself, going the other way I will enlist help. I removed the windows by taking the hinge with the window. While the windows are out I will finish removing the glue and touch up the paint.

My experience with aftermarket cab parts is; they nearly fit and will take some patience to attach.

Any more details about how it's tied in to disconnect power ? Guessing it disconnects battery cables somehow ? Any pics of the backside of the switch under the cab ?

Run the earth cable to the master switch and then back to the frame of the machine. Where we put the switch is great. Run a good size cable.

I have used JD doors twice, don't count on them being trouble free. They didn't fit all that well, I imagine they are made by the same folks who make the aftermarket doors.

I had to bend them to fit at the bottom.

I would recommend the cab kit that has the plastic backing on it. makes it way easier to do and wont end up with wrinkles in the new interior. they cost more but are well worth it!

345R suggested the interior pieces that are on plastic backing and they are held in place with a few dabs of silicone. Look at Fehrs website for a you tube video of the installation or Tractor Cab Interiors has a youtube video of an 8 year old girl installing a lower kit that is on plastic backing. Her father glues the pieces before handing them to her, provides advice and her grandfather films the installation.
