Subject: Cab for John Deere 4430 open station ?

Western Cape, South Africa
Would any Sound Gard cab fit on my open station John Deere 4430 ? Like one from 4440 or 4630 ? Has a syncro transmission. Can the levers and things be modified if the cab is from a quad range? Tractor is a long term restoration project as money permits. Thanks

Yes, you can change out the shifter area easy enough if you get one with a quad or a ps.
Early 30 series is different than later 30 series and 40 series for steering and valve. You can use your steering column area in the 30 cabs for sure, I can't remember if the 40 series cab is the same. It changed at some point......
Oil cooler will have to be changed out for one with a/c condenser, then all the other a/c stuff as well.

Other poster is right, probably isn't money ahead to do the switch. At the very least here in the states there are guys looking for open stations. It has good value.

I have changed 3 different 4430's from cab to open station, but not the other way around.

Yes , it would probably be better to buy a tractor with a factory cab. This is a original open station. I think the best I could do is to maybe fit the two post canopy. We didn't have a lot of the 30 series sold here with cabs. Most were open station. Same with the 4440 s. More with the four post rops than cabs. Some tractors had cabs that were built here in South Africa. Here are pics of a 4440 with the other cab, but I don't like the look of the cab.

Yes, when I posted the pics I thought you would probably recognise it.

Like the fat tyres. Did they widen those rims? Do you know whose tractor this is? Looks familiar...

If that is a true factory 4430 open station it would have way more value to someone else stock as a restored open station.

+1. That tractor is great the way it is!

Better check to see if axle housings have cab mount holes in them.  We helped restore a 4430 several few years ago that basically had 4020 housings on it.

I think this may be a problem. I don't think the axles has the cab mount holes. Didn't think as far as that.

If you want a 4430 with a cab on it go out and buy one. The genuine open station 4430's are starting to become hot property with collectors and those who are just nostalgic for the old days. I would think you could fix that tractor up a little and sell it for a pretty penny. I'm guessing you would get enough to buy a real nice 4430 with a cab. I wouldn't try to put a cab on that tractor. It can be done but it won't be worth the hassle.

Edit: Sorry I did not notice that you were in Africa! That might change things a little as far as being able to sell the one you have and find another reasonably priced one with a cab.

The Internet

The tractor is in South Africa, their market for used tractor may be different to that of North America.

Like others have said factory open stations are getting harder to come by but your location also changes things. Did our 4430 a couple years ago, all rubber hoses and wiring harness were shot so it was time.

Being a syncro, I don't think you will have to worry about missing out on some collector value some day. If it was a quad or powershift then maybe. As for the rear axles, you should be able to fab up some brackets that clamp around the axles that the cab can bolt to. Sometime in 1975 was the split from the early style steering valve to the later metering valve. It is possible to swap valves out of the dash, so even if you get a 40 series cab, you can put the early style steering vavle in it and it will work. That's what I did when I put a cab on my 6030. Also in 75 the well under the seat was widened for a better suspension. So getting a later cab has advantages over the early style that had the 4020 style seat suspension. Even if you get a 40 series cab with the hydraulic seat, you can still hook all that up with a couple hoses and fittings. The outlets in the rear should be a direct hook up and the shifter shouldn't be bad either. It's very likely you can unbolt all the shifter brackets from your right fender and bolt them in the cab. If not I am sure a salvage yard would have those parts. So even if you get a cab with a quad range, the mounting points are the same.
