dslman - 1/15/2016 16:31 Something like this? I also have a few pics of a 7588 that is/was suppose to be in southern Iowa. Maybe Clay or Cliff can chime in about them.
No, the 7688 was the planned higher-horsepower evolution of the 72-7488. Totally different animal than the Steiger-built tractors in your pictures, those were the makeover of the 43-4786 4WDs. Only 2 each were built of the 7388, 7588, and 7788 making them even more rare than the Super 70 tractors. Yes, I've seen the 7588 that lives in southern IA, but not sure about it's current status.

Never was a 7688, the IH/Steiger 4wds were the 7388, 7588 and 7788 which were to take the place of the 4386,4586 and 4786. The 7388 had the DTI-466, the 7588 and 7788 had the DV-800, just like the 86 predecessors. There were 2 of each built, one with 3pt hitch and one bareback
The 7288 and 7488 were the 2+2 styled Super 70 series

Yeah, the 7688 was supposed to be part of the "Super 70" series, which was to replace the 2+2. It was supposed to be the biggest of the series, and there was a 7088 that was supposed to be the smallest of the series. The 7688 was supposed to be rated at 260 HP, so tough to say if they would have used the 466 in that one. I'm not a diesel mechanic, but you might be able to get that kind of horsepower out of that engine and keep it together for any period of time.
