Subject: How to weld excavator bucket tooth adapter to bucket?

Mid-Missouri

I am going to weld three teeth adapters to the cutting edge of a bucket I bought. The bucket is going to be used on a Deere 200C LC. It is two feet wide. It was recommended to me that a wire or stick welder would work, but 7018 with our Pipeliner would be the best option. For convenience, I will likely use our wire feed Miller 252. It has .035 wire. Can someone give me pointers on welding multiple passes in an application like this. I obviously don't want to do it again.

Thanks

I'd limit the passes to not get the welder too hot

A 250 amp machine will only have a duty cycle of 45% or so on high

6 or 7 passes would be a start

We kept ours hot with the rosebud while welding, penetration went all the way thru better it seemed.  I think we had 5 passes.  Same excavator, 18 months on them now and nothing broke or cracked

Many years ago I worked at a Case Industrial factory before farming full time. Welded thousands of tooth brackets on buckets for excavators and backhoes.
Position and tack weld where you want it.
Fill the crack between the 2 pieces with a 3/8" weld.
Lay the second pass 1/2 way into the first pass on the lower side of the first weld. (bucket side)
Third pass should fill the gap between the first 2 welds and the tooth.
3 passes was all that was put on at the factory. (back then)
I don't feel like I explained this very well but after all these years I think I could do them in my sleep. You have to do a lot of welding to trip that welder out.

If you are asking about the process of multipasses... Horizontal

1. Lay your root pass 2. Next pass, opposite direction, tie in the root pass and bottom material (bucket) 3. Next pass, same direction as #2, tie in the root pass and top material (adapter). Keep adding passes, building from bottom up. Change directions so your puddle ends where the previous weld began.

Vertical up. If you have to ask, don't do it tell you practice, and you won't learn it in an hour.

Vertical down. Take your adapters and throw them in the scrap barrel, atleast you will know where they are at, because you will lose them in the dirt.

Overhead. Same as horizontal, bottom beads first, lower heat/voltage, but keep your wire speed/amps higher.

That is the best description of vertical up welding I ever heard.
Honest answer about vertical down, too.

I wouldn't worry about that 252 until the fan came on for an hour. No way you are going to put it over the duty cycle on multi 3" passes.

I used to work in a factory that made excavators. I never welded there but I remember they always heated the area cherry red with a rosebud to get proper penetration. It's been so long ago I forget exactly why but I think I heard because the tooth bits were different metal and needed to be hot to aid penetration.

Have always used Duel Shield when welding on buckets, same as 7018.

I would consider preheating area around tooth base to 350-400 degrees. 7018 is a good choice
