I've been curious about this for years but never really heard that it was taking off. Anyone use Veris technology and if so was it helpful in crop management? There are several measurements claimed to be accomplished with this machine but i was mainly interested in EC. Would like to hear what others have done.

We did our whole farm over a few years and now use it to create map zones on our fields. The EC maps are very accurate and correlate to what we have experienced over the years. We now use these maps to adapt our fertilty program to the grounds capabilities. It takes a few years to tweak your zones and know what certain areas can produce but if u have a yield monitor u can determine if your headed in the righg direction. Also must add that u need the ability to put on different products at different rates on the go. Can get tricky if you are zero til.

We have used it for irrigation management zones and corn planting prescriptions so far. The water holding capacity of the soil corresponds well to EC. Generally the more water the soil can hold the less water we apply with the pivot. We irrigate in an area that typically receives rain throughout the growing season. The corn planting prescriptions are tied to water holding capacity with more plants in the higher water holding areas.

I get far more information from grid sampling then ec. Ec tells me nothing of nutrient levels.

Use the Veris to make zones, then sample the zones. Same thing you do with gridding.

We purchased a Veris machine this past year and did some acres for our customers this fall. Our machine does ph and organic matter on the go. It has helped us apply VR lime this fall and we are looking at the possibility of VR sidedress N down the road based on organic matter levels. I have a customer that has a 270 acre field and we were able to pick out approx 45 acre area in the middle that was lighter soil that needed lime and additional potash that we applied this fall. We are still learning but we are excited about the possibilities with the machine. I hope to spend some time with some larger growers this winter to go over their yield maps and possibly use the Veris machine to map some fields to help correct some problem areas.

I have 'Verised' my farm and use the maps to make prescriptions for site specific telone application. The maps sum to correlate very well for us with our root knot nematodes. Saves a ton of money on telone!

I have run many a thousand Veris acres.  That was my job for a couple years.  Like said above, you use the EC data to build zones, then sample the zones.  Also depends on closeness of swath and speed you are running.  The data is nice, but you are going to need someone or some software to interpret the data and build maps.  Helena Chemical uses a Veris rig for their HyGround soil mapping service.  It was ~13/acre for mapping and 3 years of prescriptions.

Interesting question Steve. Anyone else out there using or thinking about using Veris?
