Subject: What's the difference between a NH BR740 and BR740A?

Farmington, Maine
I currently have a John Deere 535. It has been a very good baler but it's slow and I can't push it in big winnows or it will clog.

I need to spend a little $$ before tax time so I'm looking for a good used baler. I'm looking at a BR740 that has the larger tires, silage special, with both twin and net.

I am also looking at a 740A silage special that is just twin tie but for a couple thousand less. From what I have read net is more expensive to buy but is nice so long as bales are not frozen with ice and snow, so in my case it's not a deal breaker.

Both balers look very good to excellent.

So what's the difference between a 740 and 740A?

Main differences are software and hardware improvements mainly to the netwrap system.

If you ain't happy with a 535 feeding, don't get a red one.

If you buy a red one with new style wide pickup and outside caster wheels you cannot plug it. Not a green thing that will touch it except an army worm.

had a br740.. what a miserable witch of a pick up system? got tired real quick of facing back watching the pickup more then looking forward? and not forget how loose straw would build up on front of the belts and screw up the net wrap system... do I sound bitter? yes..

I traded green to red a few years back because of feeding issues with the green one. The NH's will feed anything you can drive over about as fast as you can drive over it, compared to the older Deeres. And I am an all-green guy except for hay equipment.

I agree Kdd. I have a 450 with the wide pickup wheels and you can cross heavy windrows and not plug it. Also the only red I own! I owned a green one before and I think I backed up more than I went ahead. Also an older model to be fair.

Dad has a 780A and it is a good baler, but the pickup is the worst part. Well known issue according to others and dealer. They can put a 5 bar pickup on them, change style of the teeth, and add a roller that is supposed to help a lot.

This is on the mega-wide. Corn stalks just get pushed into a wad in front of the pickup. Hay wraps around the stupid little augers on the sides of the head if you ever get off the window at all.

Makes on heck of a tight square looking bale. Net wrap once set right will just work and work. Pickup sucks IMO

We had a fair bit of trouble with the little augers on the extra wide pickup wrapping hay around them and plugging on our BR780. We replaced the augers this spring, and had no further problems. One of the old ones had a sharp exposed notch from a bad factory weld that was catching hay. Both augers had big chunks of weld spatter and poorly fitted joints that would catch hay. The new augers are much cleaner.

I think a pickup the same width as the chamber, but with the big "tucker wheels" would be better than the extra wide pickup.

All that said, the BR780 has been a great baler, with much better capacity than the older Deere we had.

I've not been impressed by nh balers. I don't own any green but I would buy another deere baler if I needed one. The newer deere balers are much better IMO than the nh balers. My personal experience is mostly running green balers. When we've run red and green side by side the green runs longer without issues. Hopefully nh has fixed their pickup feeding issue or I wouldn't even consider one with the little augers, what a pain in the you know what.

So from what I hear above;
I will like a NH better than my JD,
I should stick with JD and not buy a NH
NH has a better pick up than JD
NH has a worst pick up than JD
I will love a NH if I've had a JD
After I've had a JD I will wish I'd stayed with JD

That clears thing up quite a bit. Sounds like there are good balers and bad balers in both NH and JD and people have owned both.
