Went to the ag equipment show in Albany today and saw the Top Air atv sprayer. We were impressed with the design and may get serious about it. However, we do not have enough atv to pull it right now.

We have looked at the Canam and Gravely, which I think is the same as Polaris. But we are not interested in using this for play. We need a rig for towing a sprayer and a Vicon pendulum spreader. We finally found a dry weight on the Top Air of about 1,600 lbs. The dry Vicon about 6-700 we estimate on a trailer with a Honda engine driving it. So ad 1,500 lbs of product to either machine and it can get to be a handful. We are pretty much all flat land, so no real hills.

What is a known work horse that would be capable if this sort of work? Can Kubota or those type of machines stay afloat like a Polaris or similar?

Our 2015 Honda Foreman Rubicon is amazing. We pulled a 250 gravity wagon loaded with wheat seed. It's got over 1200 trouble free miles. Bryce (12yrold) works it hard.

For pulling big loads I would use a Kubota RTV. Move our 635f around all of the time with a rtv900 and handles it good. Diesel, 4x4 and hydrostat transmission should do what you want with ease. That size load you would want a utv not a 4 wheeler. The only down side to the Kubotas is the top speed is around 25.

25 is plenty fast for the farm use. Is the hydro foot controlled?

The hydro and fuel are both controlled by the throttle pedal, its a simple mechanical cable arrangement. You can't go slow at high revs or fast at low revs like a lawnmower or something, the fuel/hydro are connected by a simple lever system.

The Kubota is definitely the strongest workhorse of the UTV world. But for me, On the long rides, the gas pedal was hard to keep down, it really took effort, not like a pedal in your car. Wish they had a thing where you could set the throttle. Maybe there was some adjustment I missed, but that was one of the reasons it went down the road for a Polaris.

The new Honda pioneer 1000 would be one to look at. Or the new Can am work UTV should be really good too. I would stay away from Polaris if you're going to use it hard....you can visually see how suspension and driveline components are built lighter than can am or Honda, despite Polaris seemingly being NAT approved for who knows why.
If you want atv I would go with a Honda with a manual transmission such as foreman above, or the rubicon, not the rincon.

Seems like the guys here that had ATV sprayers no longer have them. Their capacity isn't very good unless you have only a few acres to spray. A spra couple with wide tires will float as well as a UTV, with a lot more capacity.

The UTV I would buy is a little harder to find now days but it has AC as well as power steering and a radio. They were available in both 2 and 4 wheel drive manual and automatic transmissions. Buy a bronco 2 for a couple of grand and use it until it dies then buy a real sprayer

825i gator does just what you're talking about here. Tons of power, and I've never slipped the belt. First one lasted over 10k miles. We spray 40 acres at a time with our jm innovations unit. Almost zero compaction and the gator rides like a dream across the field.

I believe it's the atv mini floater sprayer. 200 gallon 50' booms I believe.
I know Kubota has been mentioned several times. They are nice, but they'll beat you to death. (Ride) Solid rear axle, and the gator will out pull it, had to pull a car out of the ditch with gator that the diesel Kubota couldn't pull out.

A gator can be bought for right at 10 grand. It's Not much more than an atv, we just bought a second one at that price.
My current unit has 1,400 hrs and 14,000 miles. Very dependable. The starter location is my biggest gripe on the whole machine.

Old pokey, if you are going for flotation the diesel 6x4 gator is what we use. We have a gk spreader for slug baiting and we built a 100gallon tank with rears 32' boom, foam marker, Honda motor with ace pump and Raven 440 with radar. It will go better then my Honda 500 on new planted grass. The kubota rtf is nice also we have both, the kubota will not float, not even a little.

Thanks Stanley. Yes, flotation is key, but we want safety too. We hope to not use the sprayer much, but since we used quite a bit of tillage this year to get rid of some herbicide carry over, we need something lighter than our 2000 gallon 132'ers for the....as we used to call it "the hoelon sprayer".

Or a samurai????

We get along good with j&m 40 foot sprayer.

The thing I like about the samurai is that it costs less than half of a new utv. But then again it does have yearly costs of license and registration, and the kids can't drive it ( good or bad!!!)

We went that route at one time. We couldn't keep the samurai going, weak clutch and rode absolutely terrible. It's interesting to see the different opinions. You couldn't give me a samurai or tracker. https://www.muttonpower.com/c-8-john-deere-gator-utility-vehicles.as... this is the place I had my local dealership price match. I love my Ranger 6x6, and I think it could do it, but I would have to recommend something a little more stout such as a Jeep for what you are asking of it. 3200# loaded is a LOT to ask of any machine that weighs less than half that.

We have a 60 gallon tank that we spray with all summer in the back of the Ranger and it handles it like nobody's business.

I have found with my Ranger that the usual limiting factor is traction. It CAN pull the 40'FD-70, or the 1293 heads, but it spins out if empty or on loose gravel.

It did however pull a fuel tanker with 350 gallons in it to the combine this fall, but it knew it was back there.

I would think with mine if I tried that, I would have to upgrade the cooling system. I have one of the 2012's that runs warm anyway.

I really like the Kawasaki Mule Transport. The new ones have power steering and diesel engine. I lifted mine and put 27" Essex Surefoot tires and really increased the load capacity.
Essex also has custom configuration for mules and can custom build anything.
May be worth a look?

A 200gal tank is too much for the Kubota hydrostat. Guess how I know. It will start to slip and get hot...then slips more and gets hotter. I tried the Kubota 900 first as it is viewed as the "workhorse" and not a toy. I now use a ranger diesel. It does much better forthis application. The weak link (drive belt) is much easier and cheaper to replace than the hydorstat on the Kubota. I don't think any have a rated towing capacity for what you are wanting to do but having tried both I will take the ranger

Here is a pic of what we have used since 98-99 it is a 150 gallon Gleve brand sprayer. I was told when we bought this that Top Air had purchased the design from them and had then added their rear X-fold boom ours is 45' and folds up the sides. Origionally it had a John Blue piston pump and solenoid valves on it which we used for a couple years before converting it to ball valves and a Honda Ace pump controlled with Raven controller. We use a Raven Cruizer GPS for speed and guidance along with the foam marker. We used to spray everything with this but now only do soybeans and have the corn and wheat custom applied. Biggest downfall of system is tank size as we have to do several fill ups per field. So to answer your original question: pulled first year with Yamaha Kodiak 400,next year went to Yamaha Grizzly 660 and now use a Grizzly 700. Most important thing I feel no matter what you use is make sure you have good aggressive heavy duty tires.

Love that receiver mount. No issues with it shaking around up there?

I know we will have to tender the rig, but I figure since it is only for the wet stuff and I have to haul it anyway, a tank and the extra time at that time of year, wont be too big off issue for me. Especially since I can do so standing on the ground rather than a 8' up step.

I need 66'. I see the top air has a 60', so I can add a couple nozzles without too much work. But yours is the size and configuration we are looking for. Thanks for posting.

Pokey,
Couple other things I've thought about here at work this morning whatever type of vehicle you go with to pull the sprayer be sure and look at the hitch and make sure it looks like it will handle some abuse or plan to modify. We broke the chinsy cast one on the first grizzly we used and then last year when we bought the new grizzly the first thing I did was take 1/2 plate and built a plate that mounted under the frame all the way up to the motor and ran it out the back with braces and a receiver tube which also kinda doubles as a good skid plate. The other thing you might want to look at is a company called JM Innovations they also make atv sprayers they have a couple models one is a small budget model but they also make a 200 gallon one with 60' booms there are a couple floating around our area one is pulled by a Grizzly like ours and another is a gooseneck model pulled by a Suzuki Samauri SUV but if I recall they have or can make a gooseneck that will mount in a side by side UTV.

"Here" the atv with the trailed sprayer is used mostly for pre emergent herbicides (not insecticides or fungicides) at very low pressures using AIXR nozzles, so very few fines to drift. Broadacre so crossways to the wind and always with a mask. Also usually only when it's too wet and soft for a tractor, although the atv used to do a lot of dry acres for us. Insecticides with a tailwind? No thanks.
