Looking for a gooseneck trailer, something like 30 foot with a hyd dovetail. Which brand is the best? Aluminum or steel? Will be carrying 23k lb dozer, 6170R or 304K wheel loader. Have yall had good luck with the hydraulic dovetail trailers?

PJ trailer here. 15k axles with 17.5 tires, and hydraulic dovetail. It hauls a JD 6140r, telehandlers, Case 580 backhoe, and 10k lift capacity forklifts. It handles the heavy weight of this machinery well.
I'd definitely recommend PJ brand. I'd look at triple tridem axles though, instead of dual tandems like me though.

central ohio..between Springville and Millbrook.
+1 on the PJ!!!
Edit to add: I have owned Moritz (not bad) big tex (not bad) 4 different Gatormade trailers ( by FAR THE worst) and one PJ (by FAR THE best)
The best axles, the best paint, the best brakes, the best wiring and the best jacks. I will buy nothing but PJ's from now on unless something changes.
I will never pull another Gatormade even if they gave it to me fofor free.

I called today and got a quote on a red rhino from go bob. From what I hear they are the Cadillac of trailers. Identically spec'd (20+5 with 12k axles) it was $3200 more than a big Tex.
I am close to the oilfield and I see all these hotshot guys running big Tex with heavy loads on rough roads and they seem to hold up so I am leaning towards saving the money and going big Tex. It is not like I am going to be pulling it everyday or anything like that.

Does PJ still powdercoat their trailers? I have a 2006 gooseneck flat and 2008 gooseneck dump with the coating coming off in large sheets. Little if any metal preparation I assume.

I was just pricing out a new PJ trailer today. The salesman said that if you are ordering a new trailer (as opposed to buying one "off the lot") you can request powder-coat primer under the final coat of powder-coat for $110 extra. He said that this has only been available for about a year and a half so still doesn't know if it makes a big difference or not. I was thinking that for that price it might be worth it.
I have a 25' 2008 PJ flatbed right now and it has been a good trailer. Paint is chipping off in places where it gets blasted by gravel thrown from the trailer or pickup tires. The rest of the paint is still in good shape.

I guess they must have made mine on a Friday or a Monday then. I have a 2009, 24,000#, 27+5 PJ and the paint is GONE. It was powder coated and looked great at first. Now it only has half the paint left. The landing gear turn hard and I have taken them apart, cleaned and lubed, but still turn hard. And the brakes when they work might slow down the trailer when empty. Other than that it's a great trailer!

I bought one in 2009. Took it back in 5 months because the paint was already worse than it was on my 2006 Corn Pro gooseneck stock trailer. Ordered a new Corn Pro on the way home. Still looks good.

If you're going to haul a dozer weighing 23,000 the correct answer is none of the above. I don't know of any gooseneck trailer rated to haul that much weight. Even one rated for 30,000 GVW would not be heavy enough.

The GVW for the trailer includes the weight of the trailer, which for a 24,000 GVW trailer will probably be at least 8,000 lb. 23,000+8,000= 31,000. So you would be 7,000 overweight hauling that much. The trailer rating is not what you can haul, it's the weight of the trailer and load combined. A 36,000GVW trailer might do what you want, but the hydraulic dovetail will add to the empty weight of the trailer.

I would NOT get another PJ trailer myself. I have seen great trailers from both Felling or Diamond C. Looking at the website, you can get a Diamond C with tandem dual 15,000# axles, or tridem dual 12,000# axles. Even then I think it would be over the 30k gvwr with the dozer on.

Loadmax for me 35+5 conventional dove low profile with 3 12k axles ... All we move is Ag equipment and some big folk lifts. It's been a great trailer good paint nice ramps the only thing I don't like is the chain box..the paint is 1000% better on the load max than the corn pro it replaced after the first month with the corn pro the paint looked like a 10 year old trailer. No matter what brand you buy be sure that you get 12" cross members!!!

PJ pulls great and handles a load really well. As far as being structurally sound, they are built really well. However, their powdercoating is terrible. Bad enough that I will look at a different brand just for that reason. I routinely pull 28k lbs plus the weight of the trailer so close to 35k. It's a 27'+5' tandem dual. Heard a lot of good things about Felling. Would really like a Crossman aluminum but I doubt I can afford it.

What are you guys pulling all these heavy loads with?
28,000lb plus a 8-9k trailer is an awful lot of weight for a one ton dually.
I too am in the market for a tandem dual with 12k axles to haul a 17-18k machine behind a one ton dually and that much weight makes me a bit nervous.
Now I pull it with a 5500 Ram but before we got this truck I pulled everything with my F250 and 2500 Duramax. Elec/Hyd brakes are a must but worked fine.
Have a buddy with the same trailer that pulls 25k quite regularly with his 2500 Duramax. Not ideal I know, but it works.

So I guess I don't have much to worry about hauling a 17-18k machine behind my duramax dually. I was actually debating if it was going to be adequate or if I needed a bigger tow vehicle.

I have a load max hydraulic dovetail. It's a 32'. The heaviest we haul withit is a 16 k boom lift. Mainly haul steel with it. We are commercial though and have dot #. I would not haul much more than 20 k with one, Even with electric over hydraulic brakes I feel it is struggling to stop when hauling the boom lifts. We do have a class 8 truck to haul with and I prefer it, though breaking its trailer down to unload does take more time. We have several load max trailers and have been happy with them. If you are looking at aluminum trailers you must have an oil well on the farm.

The big Tex 22gn isn't that impressive but I like the looks and specs of the 25gn and am considering one of those. I have never had a big Tex heavy duty trailer but I have had several of their smaller ones and I liked them.
