Subject: J&M Grain Cart Slip Clutch Help Needed

This is on an older J&M 750 cart and I think at one time the clutch was replaced with an aftermarket unit.

Today the cart operator didn't have the PTO speed high enough when the grain gate was opened and slugged the auger. The slip clutch did smoke a little but before the PTO got turned off, and the rear part of the clutch with the split flange spun on the shaft.

We can't seem to get the split flange to slide ahead on the solid shaft going to the rear. It spins fairly easily on the shaft and moves a little, but won't come off when smacked with a hammer and punch.

There is also a small hex set screw on the outer circle of the rear half where they meet. Taking the set screw out made no difference.

Any ideas? I don't want to break the casting on the clutch......

Did that exact same thing on a J&M 750.....only problem is that it was probably 6 years ago, and we traded 2 years ago so I can't go look. BUT I don't remember having that problem, seems like it was an easy fix. All I know is it smoked and spun but we were up and going again shortly.

So I guess I told a story but gave no solution!

On the J&M website I found the owner's manual and it appears as there should be a 5/16 x 1 1/4 inch half moon key but I don't see a snap ring or anything else that would keep the rear half from coming off of the shaft.

Maybe more force is the only answer?

Just put new clutches (2 pieces) in mine a couple days ago. Mine came apart iwith just the tools in the truck. 3 # hammer and a long punch, penetrating oil, lots of swearing. The shaft is about 4 inches long. I got it started wedging a pry bar at the end. Don't hit the clutch it is only pot metal. Pound by where you took out 2 bolts that hold it on the shaft.

The set srew on the outer piece is to allow you to remove a number of steel balls that act as a retainer and a bearing.
When ours went it split the cast sleeve in two parts, made removal easy.
I would think two small wedges would help your cause.

Subject: The solution to the problem:

After too much time was spent trying to get the rear half off of the shaft, and after two come-a-longs didn't help, and not wanting to break the slip clutch either......my brother said "You know, some of the augers have a shear bolt in them, We could drill a hole and put in a 1/4 inch shear bolt."

I replied that it was a good idea, but let's use a 5/16 inch bolt!

Running fine for a 25? year old grain cart..... Maybe one of the first ones built.
