Subject: What to replace split rims/ tires/ from 8.25-20- 100.00's with 5 hole rims on old trucks

Central ND
We have some trucks and trailers with the old split rims with 5 bolt holes of varying and will soon need tires. Is there a replacement rim that would be tubeless and a small semi tire will fit on? 8.25's are about impossible to find and Id rather not deal with them anymore anyway. Tubeless semi tires are far superior if I can find something that fits. Were there older applications that used them and / or are there rims available new?
Suggestions welcome.......TIA

I dont have a part number as well as I am not positive they were 5 lug lug but we got some from AA wheel and supply in Kansas city years back----------they were expensive to say the least. Used are impossible to find and lots of my customers just stayed with the snap ring wheels and were happy to be rid of the old widow maker wheels.

They are very hard to find used. Some trucks (most were bread style trucks) and motor homes used 5 bolt rims that took a 9-22.5, the replacement for 8.25-20. They will probably cost $100-150 each if you can find them. New are available, custom made, but I'm not sure who is making them. I think they are around $300. What style rim do you have? If not the widow maker (firestone rh5) split rims are still serviceable and tires are available. I bought some tires for around $200 a few years back.

If you have someone in your area doing the true widow makers I bet he is set to retire in the her future. Widow makers have been done in my area for 10 years

Not sure if I was clear, but I was meaning to say if you don't have widow makers, other types of split rim are still serviceable. It is hard to find someone to service widow makers, and someone that has to ask shouldn't be doing them at home. I was surprised, I went through a fair amount of trouble finding a different style split rim to replace some widow makers. After I got it done I was at the tire shop and the guy told me that they don't like to advertise it, but if they are in good shape they will still change the rh5's.

I did this on a 67 Ford F600. School buses used the same pattern as my Ford. Ran a 9-22.5 tire to replace the 8.25.

I believe AT4-1600 reference to "widow makers" may refer to (2) different poorly thought out and extremely dangerous rim designs. One was built by Firestone and was split in the middle with a slight lipped rolled on to both halves then to "improve" on an already poor design, the lip tapers to nothing at 2 points to allow the rim to be disassembled. The other poorly designed wheel, I believe was built by Goodyear/Motorwheel, which had a solid drop ring with 2 spots where the lip disappeared. Many will be familiar with this design as many manure spreaders with 20 inch tires or New Idea corn pickers were equipped with this unit.

A third experiment in stupidity was the split base/solid ring open center rim.

The first 2 make adequate bases for grinders or short, non adjustable jack stands as they are built with centers, the open center/split base isn't as good as a solid base for a ring around a patch of chives (because the chives may escape thru the split base), all 3 designs should be repurposed.

IM MY OPINION ANY SLPIT RIM IS A WIDOW MAKER! I HAVE ALL THREE STYLES OF SPLIT RIMS MENTIONED >>>>> also >>>>>>including the snap ring ones.

You'd think as many of those old wheels there are in the country, and as many people there are looking to change them out we would have a ready market for new solid wheels to replace them.

I guess I don't understand marketing well enough.

They are readily available (22.5 rims) from several sources such as Accuride (which I believe acquired Firestones wheel business) and they are available in various sizes and bolt patterns but while many people will spend hundreds of dollars per wheel to fancy up a pickup, $100 to 150 per wheel for a working truck is outrageous. Marketing need s to make safety sexy then they can sell those tubeless replacement wheels.

I guess I was under the impression that it was hard to find wheels for all these old 1.5 ton and 2 ton trucks with 6 and 8 hole wheels.

I know it was discussed at length a while back on this forum.

If I mounted a grinder to the base of a widow maker wheel and left it in the shop no one would use it.... I unloaded one from the pickup onto the scrap pile that had a old dead tire with NO air on it just tossing it out of the back of the pickup and my kids screamed what the hell you trying to do kill us all?????? They also called their mom who was in the clutches of a menopause attack so she could yell at me and call me names. So I had my attorney send her a nice letter with a picture of the tire and wheel and a collection notice about her child support she owed from the year she needed to back pack around Europe and "FIND" herself
