I have looked for timing marks for removing the ink pump but have not found any. What is my starting point/process before taking pump loose

You can remove the pump at any time, and worry about timing it upon installation. Behind the injection pump, is a locator pin that goes into the camshaft, for the timing mark on the engine. On the injection pump, there is a plug you remove, and the timing pin in underneath that. You rotate the pump until the notch in the inside of the pump is seen, then install the pin into the notch. Borrow a service manual from the dealer, for pictures to make it clearer. Its actually very simple to time on these engines.

Loosen bolts holding pump to front cover and use t-puller to loosen gear from pump shaft. Has two holes in either side of shaft just for that. I think they are 8mm. No key way, just interference fit. I have no idea how many pumps I've pulled off 8.3l engines and I always pull the plastic pin out and just eyeball it with mirror till timing hole is close to center of hole the pin came out of. I can never 'feel' when plastic pin engages in hole. Has been fine every time.

When you put the pump back on, and have it timed, snug the nut down on the drive gear, then pull out both locating pins before final torque on the nut, otherwise you will shear the pins off. Also, use some type of cleaner on the tapered shaft, and inside of the drive gear to remove all traces of oil, and help prevent slippage on the shaft by the gear during running. Cummins upped final torque specs for the gear nut, but offhand, dont remember what the torque is. And dont forget to make sure the o ring on the mounting face of the inj. pump, is in the pump before installing. That square shaped o ring, seals the engine oil going into the pump for lubrication.

Southeastern Tipton County, Indiana

No, the engine locating pin is a plastic plunger that has a small tit that engages a hole in the camshaft. The pump locating device is stored behind a cap on the outer side of the governor housing, invert it's position so the slot that engages a tang on the governor mechanism.

As stated earlier, be sure and disengage the pins before final torque of the drive gear nut.

The pump nut torque varies with application.

It is recommended to pour one quart of engine oil into the governor housing through the large plug on top of the governor housing before starting the engine.
