Subject: Best Small Square Baler?

Missouri
I'm in a decent small square bale market. I'm wondering what would be the best small square baler for the money? I'd only be doing 1000-2000 bales of straw/year. I'd like something that wouldn't break the bank but would still reliably bale or be easy to work on. Would be baling directly behind a John Deere 9510 windrow.

Thanks

New Holland 575. Or if you must, a Deere 348. First thing you need is a wide pickup. Next is good local parts support. Either machine could bale your total in one day.

575 New Holland. We have a 570 and it's tough baling behind our 9500. The pickup on the 575 is wider otherwise they're the same baler. We only bale around 1000 squares anymore. The rest are rounds.

575's are good balers.... Put a few 100,000 bales through two 575s, Two or three years ago we started running one inline Massy baler, now we have two and a guy who helps us liked them so much he retired his Deere wire tie (about time) It sure is nice having the 3 balers the same when running the bale barron accumulator behind the balers... We had a pto shaft break and had to run the backup 575, that offset pickup sure screws up the bale alignment and space between rows for picking up with the bale barron. We did around 75k small squares of rye straw this year, we have a pretty good idea of what works and what doesn't. So in general, can't go wrong with a 575, they have been around for awhile and hold up quite well.

If you could find someone to bale it for you I'd go that route.

I do about the same bales a year of hay and some straw. My baler is a 275 NH and out of five wagons two are decent the others are junk. I don't use the small baler because the baler has seen better days but it's not worth it to buy a better one. Same with the wagons, I don't see sticking $500 on lumber for new floors to use them once a year.

Unless you are getting some crazy good margins on it I wouldn't bother. Your going to get $5000-$10000 baler and wagons for $5000 a year worth of straw that would be worth as much or more in big squares.

Straw is worth as much or MORE in big squares as small squares in your area??

You can hardly give away bid squares of straw around here. Better market for smalls.

Dairies want excellent quality wheat straw in large squares. There's plenty of people on CL giving small squares away at $2-$3 a bale.

If you are going to get a reasonably-priced older baler, you will probably have to live with a narrower pickup than you would like. So even if you do find one with a wider pickup, do yourself a favor and make a "funnel" out of plywood for the back of the combine to narrow up your windrow. I have a new MF/Hesston 1840 baler that I use to bale up straw behind our 9560W combine and I have a funnel on the back of that machine. Makes life easier for the guy driving the baler tractor. (We baled around 6000 small squares of straw just a couple of weeks ago)

BTW, I recommend a Hesston-built inline small square baler..........

575's have been made forever. There ought to be many that are reasonably priced out there.

Ive had each of these balers new, and there all really good balers. The 348 was good, felt that the auger actually fed more even than our 575, but the 575 definetly has a larger intake feed and capacity to the bale chamber, and i believe had about a 10rpm faster plunger speed. But the inline hesston baler was our favorite, always made a high quality bale, never a banana bale. Alot of balers recomended might be personal favorites people have, but mine was for sure the inline. Also had a jd328,was a good baler, but were well known for breaking pto shafts, were a little light.

We've owned all different balers, IMHO the NH 575 or the Case equivalent (IIRC 541) would  be my first choice, not perfect, but best all around.  Hesston in line is a little faster plunger speed (93 vs 100spm) but doesn't like clumps and will pop the feeder shear pin in a heart beat. NOT fun to dig it out and replace the pin in summer heat (or anytime for that matter).  JD, with the auger, will 'grind up' a clump but I've never seen one make as even bales as the NH.  The green ones always want to make a banana bale, at least in our conditiions.

FYI the knotter on the NH, Case & JD are the same, difference is NH uses chrome plated bill hooks, JD just plain steel.

Hesston knotter was trouble free for us just had to go to Hesston (or a Case dealer with old parts inventory) for parts, where as the NH other you could go to red,  the other red, or green dealer for knotter parts.

If your only doing 2000 bales a year a 570 will be plenty of baler.

A friend of ours that does custom hay stacking with a balewagon dislikes most balers except a inline Hesston. He and his brother each own one and get by great with them. they will make a square bale, unlike the offset balers that love to make a banana bale.
