Looking to get a header for our macdon 9352. Were these 920 or 922 any good and how was the capacity on them. Would be cutting dryland hay and some greenfeed. Some land lots rocks is why looking at sickle machine.

We have both and think they are about impossible to beat. The capacity is phenomenal for a sickle head. I always wish they had made the reel lift somehow since I've noticed that feature on competitive machines, but we deal with it. Not so much for in field use but when working on the sickle it sure gets in your way. We try pretty hard to keep the guards replaced and the sickle pretty new to help keep everything tight. If you let that stuff wear too much then you will have problems. I'm amazed how well they cut green stems but those sickles are moving so fast that everything needs to be clicking just right.

920 is the cheaper version of the two can't remember all the little difference but I'll give it a try. Double knife is the one that every one thinks is the only difference. Small ones are external chain auger drive instead of a enclosed oil bath drive. Belt drive not hydraulic on reel. Also reels have bushing on the bat tube, 922 has bearings. Think the 922 also had a full skid shoe package. Think I remembered most of them. You could always go to the macdon parts website and look at it. 920 was still a good unit, mine is on a 9352i. Between hay and canola have over 2800 hours.

When you say canola do you mean that you cut it for feed? I have heard of it being done but not very often or in a regular basis. If so why do you feed canola?

Edit to add: I have used a 922 head for many years now and it has treated me very well.

The only difference I have noticed between our two headers is the sickle drive gear boxes look different. Everything you mentioned above is the same on both our 920 & 922 heads. Just for reference our 920 is a 1998 model and the 922 is a 2006 model. They are both 16 footers.

If I remember correctly they updated the sickle drive gear boxes from a JD design to their own. I imagine the different boxes probably has more to do with the year than model number. My 922 has the JD boxes on it and they have never given me any trouble yet.
