Looking to purchase a JD 9100 for sprayer, planting, and backup tillage. I have 2 in mind. One is a 97 with 7900 hours and practically new tires all around. The other is a 2000 with 6900 hours and tires at about 70%. I know the owner of the 97, but don't know anything about the ownership of the 2000. Question is, were there any updates between 97 and 2000 that make it a better choice. Only thing I know of is the minor update to the gauges on the console.

Don't remember any major problems with them when they came out. If there were any pips JD should of taken care of it. Ones around here have been solid.

Is there anything to the gauge updates other than digitizing the fuel and oil pressure? Any engine updates in there?

On 9000 series I don't think that was an issue with the gauges - was still analog. 10 series went to digital. Only updates that I can remember was a diff lock and most of them got fixed at least in our area. Not a big deal, mostly a problem with the switch. 9100 has an 8.1 and its been a proven engine in many tractors.

Not sure if the hydraulic functions are the same as our 9200 but if they are look into making sure that prom in the hydraulic computer is updated. It's not a deal breaker on purchasing the machine because it is very inexpensive to do. We fought with our hydraulic rates something terrible when running air seeder motors and auto steer issues that we mistakenly were blaming Trimble for and after the update it has made basically what feels like a new tractor to us. A lot of guys have trouble with these newer machines when it comes to getting a constant flow of oil for running any type of hydraulic drive and our machine performs flawlessly now. I think the total bill for that fix was about $100. Just took us years to get educated. The fix came from this site.
