Am in the market for a small round baler 4x4 bales prob 500-1000 bales a year. Would like to lean more towards new holland but am not opposed to Heston or others, parts availability is the main concern. What are the options for net wrap and twine wrap? I'm not nailed down to either, I realize the twine wrap will be cheaper. Will be used for grass hay or an alfalfa mix and occasionally barely straw/wheat straw. What are key things to look at on a used machine? TIA

Any 4' wide baler will make 4'x4' bales. We have a BR740 NH and it makes as large as 4x5 or anything smaller. Once you have net wrap I doubt you would go back to twine. It is especially preferred for grass and straw bales.

Not all 4' wide balers will make a 4' diameter bale. Fixed chamber balers only make one size. This would include Claas, Krone, M&W, some Vicon, Deutz-Allis, New Idea, and others I can't think of at the moment.

New Holland 630/634/638/BR730 are plentiful here on the used market as they have a limited market. You might want to consider a used 4x5 and just change the size setting.
They have spring not hydraulic tensioning which do an adaquet job but no more. You'll be disappointed at how loose the bale will get with handling and the sloppy look of unwound twine all over.
Check the cv universal joints in the pto shaft for any play.... the always need to be well greased and cost big $$$ to replace.
Also, the main roll drive bearing is a weak point. Topmost roller on the machine's left. I modified the drive sprocket to provide space for an eccentric locking collar so the bearing will always rotate with the shaft.... not originally set up that way.

Any of the NH belt balers that are 4 feet wide will do a 4x4 bale. I have a 650 and often make 4x4 bales with it.
Here you can often find the 4x6 baler cheaper than the 4x5. 4x4 are relatively rare in comparison to 4x5 here.
The good thing about the bigger balers is they are build heavier and often have more features, twine storage and wider pickups. They also allow you to make bigger bales if you need too, or handle silage bales better.

The 4x4 new Hollands are ok and will bale 1000 bales. For not a whole lot more you could get a 4x5, and have a heavier built baler with wider pickup, net wrap, and capability to bale wet hay. The 4x4s are kind of an economy baler.

I'm open to anything and all suggestions. The reason I mention 4x4 is because I have a market that wants 4x4's, they can be handled by one person, you can get two in a long bed pickup, and a few other reasons. Both mixed grass and an alfalfa grass mix. If the baler can do 4x4, 4x5 etc I'm game as long as its adjustable. I'm new to round balers, been around them, watched them work, just never owned one. Thanks guys for all the input! Trying to lessen the pain of the learning curve a little.....
