Subject: NH Discbines--1431 vs 1441

I'm looking at a couple of discbines, 1431 and 1441. Both are 2005 models. What are some things in general to look at on these machines?

The 1431 has the straight standard hitch. I've read these can be hard on the PTO driveline while making turns. Salesman and mechanic both said to just keep it greased and it should be fine. True?

1441 has steel rollers which I think might be better for doing alfalfa/orchardgrass mixed hay but I don't have any experience with them. I'm thinking they should be more durable than rubber which I know are pricey to replace.

We have a 12 wheel Kuhn rake. Would I have any issues raking behind the bigger machine?

The 1441 has the swivel hitch and steel rollers but I'm sure it has cut quite a few more acres than the 1431. Bigger machine is about $2000 cheaper. Any thoughts on which way to go? Thanks in advance.

Same machine. 31 has impeller and 41 has rolls. We refer to the drawbar hitch as a cocaine hitch since the engineer had to be high on something when they tough it was a good idea. I'd buy the one with the 2 point hitch and rolls are more versatile.

Your right on the numbers and width. We have had both 13 and 15 footers. I remember the first ones with the regular hitch driving the hands crazy. Year one we went through a bunch of shafts until nh got the roll spacing right. Broke several drawbars out of 4430s and no one wanted to cut a square corner with it. Still the best drag type cutter we ever bought.

1441 hands down as long as it isn't a LOT more wore out than the 31. Take the 2000 you save and put it towards a tedder, then you won't have to worry about being able to rake 2 windrows together. My $0.02.

I didn't even know they made a 1441 until this post. 1431 is hard enough to move around on our little roads. Do you have much road travel, it would be something to thing about. I was mower shopping this winter and the salesman told me that steel was more durable, but that rubber was quieter and conditioned better. He said because the rubber rolls ran closer, it crushed more hay. Not sure if that is true or not but I found a good used one and ended up with rubber. How do the steel rolls look? When they wear out, chunks start coming off. NH are pretty simple mowers, and easy to work on. As long as the 1441 isn't totally trashed, the steel rolls look alright, you don't have difficult roads to travel, and enough power, I'd look at it. I'm not that familiar with wheel rakes. I borrowed a 10 wheel before, and it seemed like it raked ~24' or so. 2-15' passes would probably work for a 12 wheel, because the swaths will be a good bit less than 30'. How are the prices? Here a 1411 brings the most, and a 1431 with straight hitch that has set outside some and looks a little rough might bring $6-7000 or so.

We have a 1441 that we bought new in 2006. it has been a great machine. We have put a pile of acres on it, we just rebuilt the cutter bar this year. I would suggest you do the same soon if it hasn't been done already the shafts between the moduals will wear thin the splines. You can check it by moving them with your hand there shouldn't be much play between the gear boxes. Also make sure the bolts r tight that hold the modules together. The sales man said we would be better off buying a new cutter bar. I would highly consider it next time. Also 31s r 13 ft 41s r 15 ft 32s and 42s the impellers hope it helps

We used to run the wheels off 1431s. Never had a problem with pto failure. I think many of the pto failures are related to incorrect drawbar length.

But now that I think of it it may be to turning incorrectly. You have to swing the machine to the next pass while turning. Running it like a regular machine is hard on the driveline
