Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.

Desert Storm 2015 is happening this weekend. Bunch of the participants had some of their toys lined up so the peons could look at them. Water action starts with a poker run tomorrow and the shoot-out happens Saturday. Sadly, I'm going to miss it.

Many of these teams bring their own chase helicopters so they can analyze performance as the boats run. Some of them will outrun a decent helicopter, so camera guys need to be on the ball. Fastest boat last year, ran 170 MPH. I expect them to go even faster this year.

A rather radical little boat:

Little boat

Notice the propellors on this outfit. coaxial drive shaft has one turning CW and the other CCW

props

Lots of dollars tied up in the boats, but also fancy custom trucks and trailers to transport the boats:

Many of the tunnel hull boats are too wide to transport down the hiways without escorts, so special trailers are used to tip them while in transit.

I suspect that Gone Again might be one of the faster boats

gone again

Serious HP times 2. Can only imagine the fuel burn at full throttle and to top it off, these rigs burn $10 / gallon racing gas.

high HP

Of course, the outboard guys can't be left out either: My boating savvy buddy tells me that outboard motors run about $100 / HP so at that rate, we're looking at $90K before we start adding boat, trailer, tow rig.

And of course, wherever boats are to be found, you should expect to run across some pirates. These winsome lasses were kind enough to pose for a picture. Dangerous looking pirates.

Lancaster, OH
Two guys were going to get in a quick 18 holes but got behind two women that were holding them up. At the turn, the ladies continued on.

Exasperated, one of the guys says, "I'm going to walk down there and ask them to let us through!" and he walks about halfway there and turns around and comes back.

"I can't do it. One of those ladies is my wife and the other is my mistress" to which the other replies, "OK. I'll go."

He gets about halfway there and comes back and says, "You know, it's a small world."

Awesome pics as usual Ed and thanks for taking the time to post those. As I was looking I just knew you wouldn't disappoint and leave out pictures of boat "riders" and you didn't. :-)

I have a question??? On race cars you see all kinds of "sponsor" decals. Why not any on these boats?

Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.

A few of these boats are for sale. Some are advertising stuff like wraps or other stuff. Some are owned and run by the company selling like boats to folks who think it would be fun to fill 400 gal tanks with $10 gas.

Nice pictures and interesting mechanical aspects you pointed out. Must be the farmer in you. It is hard to fathom how much money is spent on something like this without any real value except to inflate someones ego.

Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.

Maybe they're just toys to most but I think it might help to remember that outfits like this can make big dollars hauling stuff out in the coastal oceans.

Probably make more on one night's work than a guy would think.

I dunno???

I suspect something more along the lines of the origins of NASCAR, only slightly different chemistry and form.

Great pictures Ed. A lot of dollars there just for entertainment. Boat racing is one event I have not seen in person. I hope to in another year or two.
Reminds me of the saying, the difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.

As nice as the boats and ladies are in your pictures Ed. I would just as soon have the Black Crew Cab Binder that's towing one of the boats, now that thing is the bomb.

At 100 mph they feel like 30 in a nice car. They really are amazing machines. Running cost is easily 6-7,000 per hour on the big cats.

Ed, As usual VERY COOL post and pics.

Do you happen to know how they unload those boats ? Are they normally hauled like " GONE AGAIN" , and then set upright for display? Looks like they are hydraulically set up to crane or level them out to unload, kind of like those special header carts ? Did you happen to get any pics how the boat bottoms are attached to that hydraulic rigging ?
I was wondering what some of the rigs pulling them looked like, then the other pics downloaded, WOW,
Anybody have any Semi truck rigs to pull them around ?
I never seen outboards that BIG. We'll have to check into one for my buddy's pontoon LOL.
Thanks for sharing...COOL !

Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.

Gone Again is narrow enough to fit down the highway flat. The wider boats need to be angled upward to present a narrower profile while being towed down the Interstate. I have seen semi-tractors towing them. They are tipped flat to be launched. I can make out a couple cargo straps tied to the inside of the outer sponsons and there are also nice cushioned brackets to rest the bottom corner of the lower sponson. I'll have to get a closer look sometime and take some pics.

Many of these boats follow a summer racing circuit and run on the Lake of the Ozarks, Lake Tahoe, and other large bodies of water that can handle the speeds these guys run. I suspect it's kind of like the monster truck and tractor pulling circuits. Which you pick sorta depends on 'whatever floats your boat', so to speak.

Love the pics. Thanks for sharing. My wife and I go to the shoot out at LOTO. Last year 244 was the top speed. The really fast ones run lycoming turbine motors. The smell of burnt kerosene is intoxicating.

Might be but none of the jet boats have near the soul of a rolls royce merlin with 2 big turbos and fuel injection or a allison set up the same way.

Nice pictures Ed. Sometimes it makes me wonder where all the money comes from! I guess I was in the wrong business! Not saying I would want one of those monsters. I am happy with my fishing boat.
