pump starting really leaking so dropped front end, disconnected all the lines, connecter etc. Pump is free in its cradle but will NOT angle down and out of the tractor.
the collar around the input shaft is out of its mount but back end is wedged against steering motor.
Are there some that have to come out the top?
i have put a bar on it wiggled, pried etc and it will not drop out.
do not want to pry any harder than i have.
all i need is about a 1/4 inch.
any tricks i am missing?

SE Nebraska, Near Misery and Cans Ass!
You did take the connector off the pump not just the split coupler?

I usually take the pump and cradle/mount at the same time, maybe this will help. I believe I slide pump and cradle forward and dropped cradle down first, reverse for installation.

Cradle is still bolted onto the tractor. JD tech manual does not indicate you need to remove this. I was wondering about this as I was looking at it, then broke out the tech manual to get the official way.
Manual says to just unbolt the pump and slide forward and out. Not a mention of removing the cradle.
Looking at it now I can see the cradle appears to be much easier, just a whole lot heavier.

I only spent about 3 hours getting the two top bolts off the pump to the cradle. Was thinking as I struggled with them, that putting these back in could be a tricky job.

Thanks for your help. Learned my new thing for the day.

Another thing that might help you next time....I have jacked front of tractor up a ways, removed rear two bolts for wide front, loosen the front two. Saves messing with the tie rods and a heavy floppy front end

When you remove the pump support to block bolts take the bottom two out first. Loosen the top two about 3/8 inch and  prize the support forward off the alignment dowels that are some times tight. Take drive shaft coupler loose from damper pulley. Now with a strong helper your good to go. If you think much of your 4020 and intend to keep it it's a good time to replace the damper, if it's a diesel tractor. Best of luck.

Not NAT approved, but I go out the top. I don't like to work under the tractor. All this has to be cleaned up anyway, yes the damper should be changed, hoses, radiator should be checked. Pull radiator, yes fuel tank also, plate cover under radiator, loosen pump from cradle and remove hoses and lift out. Done it both way, for me by myself out the top is easier.

It is so much nicer removing the pump standing up than sitting on floor under tractor working above head. It's no comparison, I think the people who say take it out the bottom haven't tried taking them out the top. I've done it both ways, take it out the top.

+1 With the hood already removed and fuel tank emptied I can have the pump laying on the shop floor in 3 hours. Much eaisier and safer from the top for me.

Out the bottom is the fastest but maybe not the easiest with out the right tools. You don't need to remove the hood also with a transmission jack, splitting stand and about 45 minutes you can have it on the ground. When I was at the dealership they only gave you 2 hours to remove and install. Both ways work fine.

In a pinch, take everything loose, put a 5-gal. plastic bucket you can sacrifice under it, pry 'er loose & let 'er drop into the bucket...won't hurt the pump, the bucket may or may not survive. :)
I can have one out & back in from the bottom before one of these "take it out the top" guys gets the fuel tank & radiator drained...

Guess these a "taker out the top guys" have never looked under a tricycle front tractor? Or had the T-bolts twist off on the 160 dollar fuel tank straps. I despise having to line all that stuff back up when it's been apart. There is a difference between repair and restoration.
