Callao Missouri
Going to rebuild 855. NTC 350 CPL 0632

Would like to build this engine to have a bit more power. Any tips?

Just some net searching comes up with putting different pistons in and setting the cam follower gaskets differently. Will get pump & injectors rebuilt and calibrated, new large dampener. Date on block is 1984, has brass shim under liners, is the block going to need machining for the newer style liners? Anything else? Using a cam out of a doner engine, plan on ordering the key way for the 400 as there was no engine id tag on the doner engine.

Where is the best place to get an out of frame overhaul kit? Is a kit from Howards ok? Thanks Jon

cpl 449 is a true 400 earlier big cam. will sure need to match cam, turbo, injectors, and pistons as they need to all work together.

Need to make sure you get the right sleeves. When cavitation works on the block under the liner they bore the block down and out. When I did mine the liners I had wouldn't fit my block right and turned out I had standard liners and needed 2040 liners. I'm guessing that yours has been done if you have the shim under you liner.

Have somebody that knows what they're looking at check the counterbores. A new engine of that era might have shims under the liners, they set the sleeve protrusion. The counterbores might need to be cut. Make sure you clean the shoulder down in the bores that guide the o rings on the sleeves so you don't roll them when you put the sleeves in. I'd check the deck on the block since you have it out, and for sure have the valves done and the heads pressure checked. Might need a different turbo, depending on what CPL you build to.

Why do an out of frame and install a used cam? This is an area more prone to wear on a cummins. At least do a complete inspection on it. Pittsburgh power has ceramic coated oem pistons available also, not sure on the power or life expectancy your looking for. I am a sucker for GOOD oem parts, but the last cummins 855 oem kit I bought was made in china.

I wouldn't use mallisons over priced junk if he gave it to me. All of cummins parts can be originated in the countries that the language is on the box. There is even some arabic on most boxes. Make sure you keep the liner shims in a bundle for each individual cyl so you don't have to guess checking your protrusion. I would also closely check your deck for cracks and wear if its been cut once already . You can go with the high lift 444 cam and only need a valve spring change . If you can find the replacement cpl for the old twin turbo 475 and use that turbo you can find 450 fairly reliable horsepower with that cam -----------its fairly easy on head gaskets and other parts. Its been a long time since I built one of these and I am looking for the part numbers on a old work order. If you need it right away you can call Marini Diesel in Denver and they can price you parts both oem and aftermarket. I have found them to be as cheap as anyplace in the US and they have tons of experience with these engines (second largest cummins shop in CO)

A4T, if a guy wanted to have an 300 hp 855 gone through that currently is down with cavitation issues, would this Marini outfit be the place to go?

What do you think it would cost to fix it up? it ran great otherwise, we put some 350 injectors in in recent years before it went down.

What concerns me is its in a 84 Peterbilt, and in their infinite wisdom, no coolant filter was ever installed from factory, and my old man doesnt believe in testing or changing anti-freeze, so you can figure out what happened. apparently this has happened before, as it had been in-framed before we bought it. Do they have to bore the block when it cavitates out, or is usually a liner change? if they bore it, how many times can that be done before you have to find another block?

Sorry for any ignorance, I dont know much about 855s. :)

If my mEmory is correct, a lot of the 855 engines use the same camshaft. They use different cam keys that have different offset for the horsepower the engine was built for.

Up until the big cam 3 they used a straight up key . The 3 used a offset key that was failure prone especially if the gear was pressed on cold. There are a few different cams in different horsepower engines but none of them will show any difference until you get what was referred to as the HIGH lift cam. these are easily identified by the beehive shaped valve springs.

Jon, with so many variations of Cummins engines does engine have piston oil nozzle coolers ? block will have to have them, now we get to the fun part, you need to find a donor engine and a Cummins man that has the knowledge and willing to help. Need cpl off both engines, Cummins has the spec's, turbo, pistons, heads, it all matters, camshaft. Not as easy as it sounds, counter bore, Cummins has a setting of liner protrusine, shims are available different thickness, use original ones if you haven't mixed them up, need a depth mic to check. if both engines use a offset key for cam, Cummins tells you what direction of cam key is installed, yes they are offset, arrow stamped on key. Setting cam follower timing, you will need a Cummins tool, NO way to time cam any other way, this is not for a novice, done it many times, its time consuming, gaskets come in different thicknest, I always measure original and start from there, have I confused you yet, got questions, give me a call, Scott.

I second the call to Pittsburgh power, havent dealt with them personally, but they are THE guys when it comes to BC855s.

I sure would call him --------he will sell you the same cam I am referencing for double what you can buy it for lol. Couple that with his EPA issues and you might build the worlds first $30000 big cam

Back in the day I got a cummins engineer on the phone when I called their 800 number. If you are starting from scratch you can get some pretty good hp for not any extra money. They sent me a holset turbo and a pulse manifold for my big cam 1. The previous owner had already done some other modifications. If you could drive it nice I got 6.8 mpg pulling a cattle pot in the winter. If you wanted to play a 160 gal of fuel wouldn't make a round trip from Omaha to Des Moines and back!
I don't know what the hp was but I drove it over 400,000 miles and never pulled the motor down if it was wound up. I never found a clutch that would hold it if it was running over 1800.
