Subject: Replacing insulation on Jumper Cables

A while ago, I bought a new set of jumper cables, only to have the plastic insulation crack and crumble away until I was left with only bare copper wires. Now a second set is starting the same path and I can't keep repairing it fast enough with electrical tape.
Yet another older set my dad used has what must be rubber insulation that always stayed flexible even at very low temperatures.

Have considered finding some 3/8ths" I.D. rubber tubing and slitting it lengthwise to rescue the cables. Where can you find something that's more economical then say fuel line (don't need the reinforcement)?

Buy some good quality welding cable and ends and make your own. You are just asking for trouble.

Hello BrentOntario

What he said. I got tired of throwing good $ away buying new cables every 5 years or so because of the insulation cracking & falling off. That is until I bought the ends & some good quality welding cable about 20 years ago now & made my own. The rubber insulation on them is still the same as the day that I bought that cable!!!

Wi

Toss them and get a better set with a good TPE coating or make your own set with good cable.

Did a set a few years ago with heat shrink tubing. Cost at that time was one dollar for three feet of heat shrink.
Original coating was good but gave up the ghost after about fifty years.

I would also vote for buying better cables or making them from welding cable. If you really want to try the hose route, can get vacuum hose in 3/8" and it would be more flexible than fuel hose also. Patrick

My brother was a radar tec at several early warning radar stations in the northern US in the mid 60's during his 3- 1/2 years in the Air Force. He brought a lot of stuff home from the base dump, some never useful for anything, but a few gems. He found 2 radar power cables, 15 ft long , about 3/4 inch of fine strand copper with a big copper terminal lug at each end, and rubber insulation about 1/4 inch thick.

We attached 4 "2 hander"( it takes both hands to squeeze the springs on those HD clamps) booster cable clamps. Their a load for 1 guy to carry, but will crank a big diesel with totally flat batteries from another tractor with 2-3 batteries. They have done an amazing job for us for 40 years. Your 1960's tax $$ at work. ;-)

I've got three sets of these, had very good luck with them, local stores (Mac's and Home of Economy) started selling them for $180,
then all the sudden it was down to $89. Didn't figure I could make much for that. Really like the clamps, all rubber enclosed and has a
good bite to it.
