Went to Napa today to get oil, my wifes car needed changed. I have been a solid mobile #1 customer for many years, though today they had their napa brand on sale for quite a lot less than the mobile. I went ahead and bought the napa, anyone else use it? Bottle says its made by Ashland, in Ky. That is the same outfit that produces Valvoline, isn't it?

Been using it for a couple of oil changes so far so good.before that was using walmart super tech .I often wonder if a cheap synthetic is as good or better than a name brand conventional

About a year ago I was talking to the oil salesman where I work,I gave him a sample of Valvoline 5w-30 and NAPA 5w-30 synthetic oil and he had there lab test them, they came back as identical.
It is a hydrotreated mineral oil, so I believe it is a synthetic using grp 3 base stock oil.
My Dakota pickup needed an oil change yesterday, so I used Toyota 0W-20 full synthetic I had on the shelf for a couple of years. The Dakota has run most of it's life with Mobil 1 0W30 in it, so I suspect the Toyota 0W20 synthetic will do just fine as it is winter plus the pickup is never heavy loaded.
I suspected since Toyota changed synthetic oil suppliers in 2011, that it was relabled Mobil1 as they use that distinctive shape Mobil jug, but using black plastic instead of Mobil's grey.
I checked the Toyota synthetic MSDS yesterday after doing the oil change. Yep , the specs are identical to Mobil 1 and the Exxon Mobil logo is in the upper right corner of the Toyota MSDS sheet. It appears that Toyots synthetic / Mobil 1 are still made from PAO grp 4 base stock oil.

I used it and thought it was fine, but if your Napa is like my local Napa you better stock up the once a year it is on sale, the rest of the year it is higher than Mobil.

I had always ran Mobil 1 synthetic in my 1500. About a year ago guy working at napa said why don't you try napa synthetic it's valvoline oil? It's $3.30 a qt so I tried it. Been using it ever since. Seems to run a tad less oil pressure at operating temp but truck has 215k n still doesn't burn or leak oil in 5k oil change. He also showed me a new quart of napa oil they had kept that a valvoline cap put on it at plant.

Thanks for all the responses. It looks like it is a pretty good oil. I found an oil test online performed by amsoil, comparing their product to other top brands. The valvoline syn ( or napa) looked pretty good in these tests. The test left out straight mobile 1, but did have mobile 1 extended performance. The valvoline performed a good bit better in amsoil's lab. Since you all have had good luck with it, and that amsoil test looked good, I think I will take the advice to stock up some. $3.79 a quart is a pretty good deal for synthetic.

I may be a little biased, because my family owns the local Napa, but it's all we've ran for 30+ years with no problems. The synthetic (and probably most brands syn) exceeds GM's standard for the new vehicles that require dexos, so don't believe the dealer that you need to run the AC Delco stuff if they try telling you so
